got Kiwix (offline Wikipedia reader) running on my 21-year-old PC running Slackware 13.37 via:

* The archive[1]. 0.10 works with 2020-07 Wikipedia but not 2023-09. They also have an updated XP build, but iirc it required SSE2 and uses JS

* Internet In a Box[2]. 3.1.2-5 is the latest without an illegal instruction error. 2025-01 Wikipedia works but the rendering is jacked up on older Firefox/SeaMonkey

I'm late to the game but I'm loving #kiwix ! All this info easily browsable on my local network. Just converted a site, The Dragon Index, to a Zim file. I was thinking of scraping it and moving that data to a database (I asked permission) but this is too easy to bother with that.

J'ai testé Kiwix, un logiciel libre qui permet de compulser Wikipédia et d'autres sites, comme Stack Overflow, hors-ligne, en utilisant le format de fichier zim. C'est un beau projet!
D'ailleurs, Framasoft s'y était associé en 2012, et le one laptop per child également, toute une époque!

#Facebook (#Llama?) seems to have joined the scraping party, so I've set up an hourly script to monitor my log files and rotate them. My Kiwix log had gotten up to 6.8GB; most of that in the last week or so. They're using very little bandwidth, 100 kB/s or less at any given time, and they seem to be rotating IP addresses, so I'm not sure whether it's scraping/indexing or them actively using my #Kiwix mirror in search results or something.

#Claude has been really busy indexing my personal #kiwix mirror for some reason. It's still going too. Debating on whether I should try to block it since it's a proprietary model that may or may not give any credit to the authors of the material they're scraping. I'm curious what even tipped them off to the existence of my personal portal.

Decided to clone and run #kiwix to keep myself a copy of wikipedia available locally (no reason. no horrifying political events going on in the country I inhabit or anything). Turned out real simple to get it running alongside some other docker containers on my server. Pretty neat that such things exist!
