Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand’s former PM made history as the first world leader to attend the general assembly meeting with a newborn. In the second extract from her book, she writes about her worry that the image would become a banner for ‘women doing it all’. #Book #Autobiography #Feminism #NewZealand #worklifebalance #womeninpolitics #GenderPayGap #JacindaArdern theguardian.com/world/2025/jun

The Guardian · ‘The high commissioner found us a bassinet!’ Jacinda Ardern on bringing her baby to the UNBy Jacinda Ardern

Reading though comments in the New York Times about Jacinda Ardern and I can't stop rolling my eyes.

She saved lives from Covid-19 but that was actually brutal and wrong!

She tried to give more power to Maori (how awful!)

Oh, and after a decisive election win in 2020, she embarked "on an ambitious programme of change at a time when people weren’t ready for it."
Well, when are progressive parties supposed to try to achive their goals if not after winning an election?? I guess, never?

I'm sure that Jacinda Ardern is not perfect and that there is criticism, but this is ridiculous.

"When you're in times of crisis, you can either try to appeal to people by using fear and blame. Or you can tackle the issues that are genuinely affecting people's lives, and you can do it with a people-centered approach that has kindness and empathy and strength and courage and reslilience as well."

Today I:

- Enjoyed so much seeing Ardern being interviewed on Seven Sharp this evening. Her humour, intelligence, and empathy shone though as bright as ever.
- Picked up my wife's pre-ordered copy of Ardern's memoir from Unity Books after work on my way to the train station. I look forward to reading after her. And Unity Books is such a wonderful place and a lovely, lovely bookshop.
- Chatted in the kitchen area with one the bright young women who sometimes share lollies around at work. She's Southern African and a told me about rooibos tea which I had never heard of before. She said she would bring some in for me to try.

"we also need the strength of shared values."

Quoting Secr. Marshall:
"governments which systematically disregard the rights of their own people are not likely to respect the rights of other nations and other people, and are likely to seek their objectives by coercion and force in the international field."

"in this time of crisis and chaos, leading with empathy is a strength. Empathy has never started a war. Never sought to take the dignity of others. And empathy teaches you that power is interchangeable"
