Quality time. A Hairy hermit couple hangs out cosily together, sitting in the sunlight, letting time pass. He holds her by the rim of her shell; she rests quietly, taps his cheliped when it's time for action. #VancouverIsland #HermitCrabs #IntertidalInvertebrates #Invertebrates #MarineLife #DailyHermit
Living dangerously. A miniature hermit balances on the tip of the leg of a small shore crab. She's tiny, but valiant. In the second photo, an even tinier hermit walks along a crab's cheliped, ignoring the watchful eye above. It's a big world out there; so many adventures ahead! #VancouverIsland #HermitCrabs #IntertidalInvertebrates #Invertebrates #MarineLife #DailyHermit

& babies develop inside their mother until large enough to be born, in batches of 4–6, as colourless miniatures of the parents! Peripatoides novaezealandiae is a species complex of velvet worms in the genus Peripatoides, found throughout NZ. My print was made based on photos of P. aurorbis, but all the P. novaezealandiae have no morphological characters that distinguish them.

New outfit, with all the trimmings. Minutes ago, this hermit backed out of the old exoskeleton, leaving behind hairs and eyes and antennae and all. But here he is with everything intact, all prepared under cover of the old skin. #VancouverIsland #HermitCrabs #IntertidalInvertebrates #Invertebrates #MarineLife #DailyHermit
Old clothes. A growing hermit backs out of the old, too small exoskeleton. Everything goes: the whole cephalothorax, legs and chelipeds, eyes and antennae, tiny hairs. The new skin is soft, stretchy. For a short while. #VancouverIsland #HermitCrabs #IntertidalInvertebrates #Invertebrates #MarineLife #DailyHermit
Secret shelter. I picked up an old clamshell, heavy with barnacles, and looked inside. Find the hermit! At low tide, hidden space is highly prized; 3 hermits share the space with assorted snails and worms. #VancouverIsland #HermitCrabs #IntertidalInvertebrates #Invertebrates #MarineLife #DailyHermit
Another amber snail (family Succineidae) from our hike on the Wiley Trails, ascending:

We're goin' up, up, up
It's our moment
You know together we're glowin'
Gonna be, gonna be golden...

Just another pretty face? Hairy hermit faces the camera, shows off her handy eating utensils. With them, she holds two servings of her favourite meal; shrimp pellets. And with her small cheliped, a toy. #VancouverIsland #HermitCrabs #IntertidalInvertebrates #Invertebrates #MarineLife #DailyHermit
Saw a bunch of amber snails (family Succineidae) on our last hike, including this adorable little one:
Tiny hermit found under a stone in a tidepool on a sandstone, rock-littered shore. Probably a Holm's hermit. (And I replaced the stone, of course.) #VancouverIsland #HermitCrabs #IntertidalInvertebrates #Invertebrates #MarineLife #DailyHermit

Today was a good day.
Lots of butterflies, a few nice dragonflies and an in-flight shot!
The mystery eggs have hatched! Look at the little i1 slings. So cute! I wonder which species they are!
