‘Sculptural, Basic, Explicit, and Brutal Letter-forms’

The inspiration for my letter-form series comes from two sources:

1️⃣ Brutalist architecture, particularly from the Eastern Bloc, is characterized by rough surfaces, unusual shapes, heavy materials, rigid lines, and small windows.

2️⃣ Bernd and Hilla Becher's industrial photography, featuring "anonymous sculpture" that rejects expressionism in favor of an unsentimental representation of the world.

In short, my goal was to create a self-standing, sculptural, basic, explicit, and brutal letter-set.

❗️ This letter-set was my reaction to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, as I started a few weeks after the conflict began.

The power required to overcome friction and the inertia of the moving parts.

Physics: the tendency of a body to maintain its state of uniform motion unless acted upon by an external force

I don’t take all house portrait commissions, but I jumped at this one because I love that house. Black and white ink drawing of a raised brick foundation house with a gabled front porch with columns and iron railing, along with brick stairs with a landing and matching iron railing to the right. There is a set of French doors on the left of the front of the house, with a spiderweb transom light on top. The main front door is closer to the middle and also has a spiderweb transom. There are two windows side by side toward the right side of the house, making a sort of picture window. The upper sash each have four vertical panes that take up 3/4 of the sash, topped by two square corner panes and a wide pane in the middles. The bottom sash are two vertical panes each. These windows have a matching, wide spider web light. All of the glass is old hand blown wavy glass and reflects the sky, the front columns, and one of the massive Southern Live Oak trees that line the street. The house is wood sided. There are several planters on the porch and stair landings. The roof is Spanish tile.
