Die #UniLeipzig hat einen neuen #Humboldt-Professor, den Mathematiker Daniel Kráľ. Am 1. April 2025 hat er die Alexander von Humboldt-Professur angetreten, offiziell verliehen wurde sie gestern (5. Mai) in Berlin. Kráľ ist ein international renommierter Experte auf dem Gebiet der Diskreten #Mathematik. Der 46-Jährige befasst sich mit grundlegenden Konzepten für die Modellierung und Darstellung von Netzwerken.

I checked in on a ninety something year old friend today. She hasn't been sleeping because of the current political mess. I was worried about her.
She said that tomorrow she will be giving public comment at our local Community College board meeting. They are planning to unresolve all of the previously passed resolutions supporting diversity at the College.
The canceled resolutions include support for Women's History Month, campus Pride month, support for undocumented students and their commitment to DEI. I told her that I had just noticed their agenda and would be there too.
Why they are complying in advance I don't understand.
This is too important to quietly pass as part of their consent calendar.
I care what happens at this school that I can see from my house and I plan to bring my opinion in the form of a public comment.
These elected trustees should be ashamed.

Alexander von Humboldt: Humboldt was revolutionizing the sciences. In September 1828 he invited hundreds of scientists from across Germany and Europe to attend a conference in Berlin.* Unlike previous such events at which scientists had endlessly presented papers about their own work, Humboldt put together a very different programme. Rather than being talked at, he wanted the scientists to talk with each other. There were convivial meals and social outings such as concerts and excursions to the royal menagerie on the Pfaueninsel in Potsdam. Meetings were held among botanical, zoological and fossil collections as well as at the university and the botanical garden. Humboldt encouraged scientists to gather in small groups and across disciplines. He connected the visiting scientists on a more personal level, ensuring that they forged friendships that would foster close networks. He envisioned an interdisciplinary brotherhood of scientists who would exchange and share knowledge. ‘Without a diversity of opinion, the discovery of truth is impossible; he reminded them in his opening speech. *Humboldt organized this conference for the German Association of Naturalists and Physicians. photograph by Martin Sirk.

Toller Vortrag von Akademiemitglied @rahmstorf (Potsdam-Institut für Klimafolgenforschung) beim heutigen #Mittagssalon der @BBAW! Einstieg mit #Humboldt, Daten & Argumente sowie den (aufgrund von Lobbyismus u eines "erstaunlichen Medienversagens") "unbekannten Konsens" unter Klimawissenschaftler:innen eindrücklich klar gemacht. Dieser Konsens liegt bei fast 100%, in der öffentlichen Wahrnehmung eher so bei 60%. Ähnliches Verhältnis bei der Frage, ob die Klimakatastrophe menschengemacht ist.
