i jumped the gun on #Filen. it's abysmally slow and i regret it after one day.

i am uploading a 189MB git repo in their desktop app and it says it will be done in 4d 21h 31min. WAT.

i don't know if it will take that long or not, i'm also rsyncing another directory into Filen via their #FUSE mount (which is using NFS apparently) and those are crawling so g-ddamned slow too. now says 6days+.

#cloud #storage with #e2e encryption options? 😬

not sure why Windows 11 completely refuses to format a microSD card for my t-deck so i can put some g-ddamned maps on it.

the drive manager, disk partition gui, format command in a terminal or `diskpart` here all fail to format a 4GB card and it's really asinine that i can't even erase a removable drive.

for USD $30 you can buy this 5GbE ethernet adapter. it will down-negotiate to 2.5GbE.

personally i have a 1GbE switch, a 10GbE switch with 40Gbps uplink (unused of course) and a 2.5GbE managed 8port switch for the hardware that doesn't have 10GbE and is stuck using usb and thunderbolt interfaces.

sidebar the driver for multigig adapters for synology filers is buggy and requires more memory than my 918+ reliably has 😭 it falls off often 😫 #householdIT

i also use `sshfp` records because i split my DNS and use SD-WAN so i need to know the moment i'm about to type a credential into the wrong sshd(1)

anyone else using TXT records to enable sorcery?

of all the services that allow a functional Internet my first love is DNS. i think it was 1993? i worked at a small dial-up ISP in iowa (2nd in the state) and with a copy of Cricket Liu's* _DNS & BIND_ i installed BIND for the first time on a pentium and fell head over heels in love 😂

among other things, i use TXT records to stash subnet ranges and dhcp allocations. e.g. `host -t txt dhcp`:

dhcp.iow.kvet.ch:
text "dhcpserver-v4=usg01, dhcpsubnet=153,
dhcprange=120-239"

i cut my IOT SSID onto a dedicated VLAN saturday and spent sunday morning undoing it 😂 i think i'm going to end up moving all my lighting to a SSID on a totally different channel. i am running out of ideas for slow wireless performance.

in the Home App you can go to Accessory Options on your HomePods, and you will get notifications on your phone when one of the #HomePods hears an alarm going off. That's how I knew that there was a dangerous situation brewing and thankfully we had Carbon Monoxide detectors in addition to smoke/Di-oxide detectors.

everyone is fine and the issue has been resolved but make sure you are monitoring for alarms with whatever methods you have available to you! #householdIT #safety #co

some photos of the #Fjorden camera grip and required stupid case with stupid metal plate on it that prevents me from using my phone on a wireless magsafe pedestal in my car for #wirelessCarPlay so i have to push the phone out of the case every time i use a magsafe attachment of any kind.

also the shutter release isn't the far right button. the dial works well. that's about the nicest thing to say about it. wish it was a purely #magsafe grip.

finally have something that is improved by putting an iPhone in a case: #wirelessCharging.

my valet with the charge pad, my little pads in the house — they all are really tricky when you have a camera lens blob that makes it uneven. i have figured out how to set my phone on wireless charging pads but it's not perfect.

the Fjorden camera grip case is a disappointment. they use a metal plate on it for the grip, dumb ugly design. more on that in (2) (1/2)

i either perfectly sized this piece of^w^wsynology filer, or i'm going to get singled out by AIs for being cruel to my filers. i've never once owned a NAS that gave me anything resembling a 'wow' because i've got like 20 NFS clients dying to talk to every available exported filesystem.

slapping that cache though. well done.

i know anecdote isn't the singular form of data (that's my phrase, for example) but the Verizon FIOS CPE for their whole-house wifi is the first #householdIT gateway/access point that my August lock at the house in PHL can stay attached to.

my #unifi gear is incapable of that and now i'm considering tearing it out for #peplink hardware (HAVE YOU SEEN THEIR HARDWARE THO peplink.com/products/soho-rout ???)

PeplinkB One Series Dual WAN RoutersPeplink's Dual WAN WiFi Routers give you enterprise-grade routing with multiple options to backup your network, and are affordable enough for any small business.

i am reinstalling my software on the wintendo (ollama and lmstudio still have all their models and preferences) and #Apollo, the #Sunshine alternative? it's complaining about the controller support and didn't create the virtual display application hook for me for some reason. going to run the installer again and see what's up.

(moonlight/artemis are incredible apps and can do fast desktop streaming suitable for gaming to Apollo or Sunshine)

guess what still hasn't been addressed by August? yup: their locks constantly falling off wifi, reconnecting, burning through batteries every time. i reported to Ubiquiti but it's happening at the other house in PHL too and i am using standard fare xfinity xb8 gateway and a mesh node upstairs but the lock in philly is also line of sight to the g-ddamned access point it's connected to.

anyone recommend i _not_ enable the Zone Based Firewall in #unifi ?

my basic setup is just a default deny, permit outbound except to YouTube and a few other places, then a permit for a subset of devices and the workstations at my desk to access said YouTube.

some port redirects through the NAT because this fiber operator doesn't do ipv6 for some reason. i use the UTM capabilities and it runs full-tilt more or less.

you try to do a local #backup of an #iPhone lately? it's hard as hell, yo!

even AnyTrans and iMazing are just twiddling their thumbs and i haven't archived my messages in over a year :grimace: the volume my home directory and default archive folder is on has sufficient space for a 512GB phone backup (384GB used on the phone) but it's just sitting there allegedly waiting for my phone. #macOS finder backup doesn't ever finish, disconnects before the end every time.
