Guinea Fowl in a field on Sheep’s Head, Co Cork a few years ago on a bright, sunny October afternoon.

My neighbour’s daughter said I need to make this helmeted guinea fowl look attractive in a photo before she’ll think I’m any good as a photographer! Honestly, I’m not sure I could get this poor bird to a level she would consider attractive, but I do like this shot of it more than some of the others I’ve taken. I also feel sorry for it as they aren’t meant to be solitary birds.

The chickens like to send out the Guinea fowl to scream at the house when they’re bored. I like to joke that he is THE EMISSARY, a herald of some Lovecraftian chicken horror. #chickens #GuineaFowl

We have both #blackkites and #redkites which perch on the house or surrounding trees. Numbers vary from two in the winter, anywhere up to about 15 in the spring and summer, when the fields are being cut for hay, or neighbouring farm has fresh intake of free range #chickens or #guineafowl. This #blackkite could often be seen flying around the house, on the look out for a tasty morsel.
