Cronos, Hellboy, Shape of Water, Pinocchio: Die Liste der fantastischen Filme voller alptraumhafter Kreaturen ist lang. Doch del Toro verabscheut „seine“ Monster nicht, im Gegenteil: Er identifiziert sich mit ihnen. Eine lebhafte Fantasie hatte er bereits als Kind im düsteren Haus seiner Großmutter entwickelt. Als Erwachsener schöpft er aus diesen Erinnerungen sowie aus der mexikanischen Folklore. Mit seinen Filmen hinterfragt er nicht zuletzt die moralische Verurteilung alles Andersartigen und hält der Menschheit den Spiegel vor.
