www.linkedin.com#matomo #webanalytics #opensource #privacy #datasovereignty #analytics | Jean-Marc COURTIADE 📈10 things you probably didn’t know about Matomo When I joined the company, one of the things that struck me was how little people actually know about the story behind Matomo - despite it being one of the most successful open-source analytics projects. So I thought I’d share… 1. A long history of privacy-first analytics Matomo isn’t new at all! It started back in 2007 as Piwik. From day one, its mission was clear: be a free, open-source alternative to Google Analytics that puts user privacy and data ownership at the center. Still its moto. 2. Beyond websites Matomo isn’t limited to tracking websites. It supports mobile apps (iOS & Android), and can be integrated with most major CMS (WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Typo3, etc.), making it a versatile choice for very different environments. 3. A French story… from New Zealand The company behind Matomo is headquartered in New Zealand. Why? Because its French founder, Matthieu Aubry, happened to settle there. Sometimes, global projects grow from unexpected life journeys. 4. Three versions, three mindsets Matomo comes in three editions: - Cloud (managed, no setup), - On-Premise (you host it, full control), - WordPress plugin (for smaller sites that want analytics inside WP). This flexibility makes it relevant from small businesses to large enterprises. 5. Data where you need it Need more advanced analytics? Matomo can export directly into data warehouses like BigQuery or Snowflake (and others), ensuring smooth integration with BI pipelines and advanced reporting stacks. 6. 20,000 GitHub stars 🎉 Reaching this milestone is rare for open-source projects. It reflects not only Matomo’s longevity but also the strength of its community of contributors and users worldwide. 7. A powerful Tag Manager Matomo includes its own Tag Manager, feature-rich enough to compete with Google Tag Manager. You can manage scripts, pixels, and custom triggers while keeping control of what data gets sent where. 8. Still alive 😅 Competing head-on with Google in the analytics space hasn’t been easy. Many alternatives have disappeared. Matomo’s survival (and growth!) shows the value of an independent, mission-driven open-source model. 9. Open source by design The fact that Matomo is open source ensures transparency and long-term sustainability. Its DNA: data sovereignty and privacy by design, two values that have only grown more important with GDPR and global privacy laws. 10. An API-first approach Matomo has a rich API for developers. Almost everything you can do in the interface can also be automated or integrated with other systems, making it a strong fit for complex environments. Note: this is a personal post, and these are also some of the reasons that made me want to join the Matomo journey. And yes, I even keep a copy of the Matomo book from Ronan Chardonneau and Frédéric Forster on my desk 😅 #Matomo #WebAnalytics #OpenSource #Privacy #DataSovereignty #Analytics Matomo

New Study Shows #Google #Tracking Persists Even With #Privacy Tools
While privacy-focused search engines like #DuckDuckGo can reduce exposure, completely escaping Google’s reach remains a significant challenge. Study simulated locations using VPN to ensure accurate regional data collection.
The findings reveal Google’s tracking extends far beyond its own products, embedded deeply within countless websites through tools like #GoogleAnalytics, #AdSense, and #YouTube embeds. hackread.com/new-study-google-
