👋 Hi! I'm Eric! I'm a scientific programmer & educator who writes mostly :rstats: code. I currently work part time at #UniversityOfArizona where I help researchers by making R packages, #Shiny apps, automated data workflows, and training them on #ReproducibleResearch practices. I also mentor data scientists for @Posit Academy. I am #OpenToWork as a contractor if any of those skills sound useful to you.

My background is in plant chemical ecology and population ecology and for my PhD I studied #tea and did field work in China. I love tea (although I've been drinking coffee more and more lately) and practice #GongFuCha when I can. I love #foraging and tasting new things.

I currently live in #Tucson but the #BayArea will always be my home.

I had the pleasure of visiting Helsinki's Tee Polku tea house today 💚

I sat down for some Korean Hwangcha, a type of tea I hadn't drank in a long time.
The dry leaf aroma was strangely reminiscent of tomato soup and french herbs, with dry blueberries undertones. The tea itself tasted lovely, of fresh apricots and green wood, with a strong minerality to it.

It was also very nice to chat with the new employee Anni about what it's like to work in tea houses 🍵

This Bihu High Mountain Qing Xin Oolong from Nari Tea felt very refreshing during the few hot days we had last week!

The dry leaves had a lovely creamy, milk chocolate and dry apricot aroma, which transformed into a sweet peach and floral flavor once the tea was brewed. It was very smooth and well balanced!

I brewed it with 3.2g/80ml in a gaiwan at 95°C for ~30 sec to start. I was able to brew it many time and it held up very well!

While in Prague last February for the Prague Tea Festival, I had the pleasure of stopping by the lovely Meetea tea house 🫖

I shared a delicious Bai Mudan (白牡丹) white tea there with two friends, and was happy to introduce them to the gong fu cha style of brewing.

Meetea is a beautiful and cozy tea house, located at the end of a quiet courtyard, and in which we were able to brew tea ourselves.

Because the tea was kept in hot kettles placed over flames, I had to first pour the water into a pitcher and wait for it to cool down a bit before brewing the tea. No precise instructions were given (about the waiting time for the water temperature nor about the brewing time), which encouraged me to rely more on my instincts, tea knowledge, other senses, and general ~vibes~
This is quite close to how I often brew tea at home, but I had never seen this in a tea house, and it was a novel and welcomed experience.

Our hosts were friendly and helpful, and I came back home with a few extra teas in my suitcase!

Drinking more of this year's Longjing (龙井茶) green tea that a friend got me back from China!

This one really took me on a journey! 🌱
The aroma of the dry leaves was very sweet and buttery, reminding me of french "sablés" cookies, and this was also present in the aroma of the tea broth itself, but along with the brews it evolved to become more fresh, even gaining some honeydew melon notes.
The taste of the tea had notes of cooked green asparagus and peas, as well as cooked dough. This in combination with its full bodied texture felt like I was having a delicious meal!
Finally, it has a sweet chestnut after-taste, and long-lasting umami notes once the nuttiness faded.

Brewed 80-90°C, not timed, and too many times to count!
