SHoWThe bacterial species in subgingival plaque can be grouped into 5 major complexes. The red complex (Porphyromonas gingivalis, Treponema denticola, Tannerella forsythia) is closely tied to periodontal disease severity (pocket depth, bleeding). SHoWPeriodontal diseases show a marked increase in prevalence with age, as highlighted by data from Jönköping, Sweden (1983).
