It's a system that is "middle crunch" in my opinion. You do track things like health and attackers make rolls against you, but the system is really open to creativity and lets players help define the environment, so it's seldom just a "punch it out" situation. The PCs were attacked by a swarm of eels when getting out of their boat to pull it ashore. We had a nice mix of combat checks against the eels and other checks to get the upset boat and spilled equipment to safety.
