@dgar Love the variety of synonyms for "died" 😆

Lessons to be learned -
• Boycott #proprietary software - use #FreedomRespecting software (a.k.a. #Libre / #OpenSource / #FreeSoftware) which is free of corporate control, and
• Boycott #centralized services - use #federated services so you aren't locked into one service.

#XMPP is still around, and thriving.

Drive by commentary:

One prob I see with #opensource, #federated, w/e stuffs again and again is that the ppl advocating for it have this like... fundamental misunderstanding of the avg ppl.

Okay so yeah, Iove open source, non-proptietary, federated stuffs buuuuuut if you're gonna ask ppl to swap, you gotta make it easy and at least as good at what they're leaving.

"But privacy, but freedom!" I mean yeah, but most ppl don't rly care about that at first. They gotta learn as they go. 1/

@keremgoart Can't say I'm really into the content you post, but I'm sure you'll find your people! Maybe you aren't #federated with the right kinds of servers? Check fedi.tips for some help. Or possibly it might help to join an #instance which is more geared towards your kind of content, I'm pretty sure those exist. fedi.garden/ can help you there.

Is there any effort to create a micro transaction system for the fediverse? TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram pay content creators for content. Is there any hope to bring people over from those platforms in a way they can monetize? I love the ad free state of Mastodon, I don’t want to see that change. I also like supporting the arts and the people that make them. If there existed some micro transaction system built into the fediverse, that could be the thing that directly attacks the only advantage social media companies actually have. Wouldn’t you love to see a world without Facebook? #microtransactions #federated #indie #creators #maker

@jerger

Valid question! One I've really had to think about in the past.

First of all, I love the #codeberg mission and am a member of the association. We're on the same side.

However, I don't think #federated instances are the best solution to hosting the world's #OpenSource.

I think individuals (rather than organizations) should have the power to seed repos they care about and keep them online.

That is: I think the solution should be of a #peerToPeer nature, not of a #federated one.

How I know #Codeberg is a public good

I know this because they are constantly under attack by fascist script kiddies who are regularly flooding them with spam, and periodically launching DDoS attacks against them. Only someone doing a truly useful and ethical public service could evoke such extreme hatred of the worlds most evil people.

The Codeberg admins deleted these spam posts within an hour of them being posted and deleted the accounts that generated them. They are doing a fantastic job, and I thank them for their dedication and hard work.
