@davidgerard omg, right?!
I went looking for this article technologyreview.com/2022/04/0, started with a search for "worldcoin orb", got a bunch of positively spun pages about how great it's going to be for distinguishing humans from AI. Added "cash payouts" to the search and it's all news about progress in the token model.
Save your critical reporting folks, those articles get harder to find (even on alt search engines)

Consultations?!?

Shouldn't it be a Crown inquiry into the #wagetheft and #exploitation of Canadians in the industry?

If the government is truly aware of the allegations, then they know the allegations go back AT LEAST as far as the Harper government... that means it spans decades... let's hear from every single one of them.

The deadly migration through wind turbines has begun for mirgatory Canadian bats. We have the knowhow and ability to significantly reduce bat collisions, but refuse to because that requires politicians to implement simple and inexpensive mitigations.

The largest bat in NAm and the only mammal to naturally colonize Hawaii, the Hoary Bat (and other bats) could be extinct in NAm soon if this doesn't change soon.

For me, the questions raised here are:

What legitimate grievances do this movement represent?

How can those grievances be listened to, acknowledged & redressed?

Whose interests are served by encouraging proliferation of these groups?

And more fundamentally, for those within such spaces - When ‘the people’ are the authority, which people are they? When laws are ‘god given’, who gets to say what god wants?

Enriching the wealthy few while screwing the poor creates the conditions in which groups like this flourish. Dismantling systems that provide safe housing, healthcare, education & income support for all who need it, feeds them. Defunding the disciplines that teach history & the critical thinking skills needed to understand the operation of power creates ever more fertile soil for dodgy ideas to spread. And spread.

The post war welfare state & universal education system were created for a reason. It’s not as if we don’t know this. It’s as if 40 years of acculturation to Neoliberal ideology among our governing classes has wiped out all capacity to remember history. The accumulation of knowledge & exercise of power in silos has eroded our ability to join the dots.

Come on, folks. We can do better than this.

ABC News · Inside the fringe groups fighting a 'quasi civil war' with self-styled sheriffs and their own courtBy Mahmood Fazal

Geared towards a #teen audience.

On the way to school, a boy is confronted by an enormous man whose hand grabs hold of his school bag and tosses it into the air. The hand pushes him towards a huge padlock, then forces him to enter through the keyhole: the schoolboy is imprisoned in a hazardous lock factory. Like the other children inside, he finds himself forced to operate a high-speed punch press. Struggling to follow the movements of the machine, he cuts off a finger. He tries to run away, but is recaptured.

Back at the factory he starts to cough up blood after inhaling iron particles that will prove lethal: the child dies on the job. Coldly, the hand picks up his body and drops it in the box the padlocks are shipped in, symbol of his murdered innocence.

How can we live with forced child labour? This #India / #Canada co-production is inspired by #Article32 of the United Nations Convention on the #RightsOfTheChild , which particularly upholds the child's right to be protected from economic #exploitation.
