kīpuka<p>Depuis le fort séisme du 13 mars, on entend beaucoup parler de la situation dans les Champs Phlégréens, le vaste système volcanique situé sous l’agglomération de <a href="https://social.sciences.re/tags/Naples" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Naples</span></a>. Souvent avec les mots «&nbsp;supervolcan&nbsp;» ou «&nbsp;superéruption&nbsp;» pour faire peur… Rétablissons donc quelques faits.<br>–&nbsp;Si l’on s’en tient strictement à la définition, il n’y a jamais eu de superéruption des Champs Phlégréens. Ce terme correspond à une <a href="https://social.sciences.re/tags/%C3%A9ruption" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>éruption</span></a> avec un index d’explosivité volcanique (VEI) de 8, correspondant à un volume éjecté &gt; 1000&nbsp;km³. Or le <a href="https://social.sciences.re/tags/volcan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>volcan</span></a> a connu au maximum des éruptions de VEI 7 (&gt; 100&nbsp;km³). Ça reste une éruption catastrophique, on est d’accord, mais pas «&nbsp;super&nbsp;» (on sent là tout l’absurde du préfixe…).<br>–&nbsp;Si le volcan a bien connu une éruption de VEI 7 dans la période géologique «&nbsp;récente&nbsp;» (l’éruption campanienne, il y a environ 39&nbsp;000&nbsp;ans), ainsi qu’une de VEI 6 (&gt; 10&nbsp;km³, le tuf jaune napolitain, vers 15&nbsp;000&nbsp;ans), son activité depuis est faite d’événements bien plus modestes.<br>–&nbsp;Ainsi, la toute dernière éruption des Champs Phlégréens, en 1538, est seulement classée VEI 2 et n’a fait que construire un petit cône, le Monte Nuovo. L’apparition d’un tel cône dans une zone aujourd’hui densément peuplée serait assurément problématique, mais on est loin du caractère catastrophique d’un effondrement de caldeira avec expulsion de dizaines de kilomètres cubes de magma&nbsp;!<br>Voilà, la prochaine fois que quelqu’un mentionne «&nbsp;l’imminente superéruption du supervolcan de Naples&nbsp;», vous pouvez lui envoyer un lien vers ce message d’utilité publique&nbsp;!<br><a href="https://social.sciences.re/tags/Italie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Italie</span></a></p>
kīpuka<p>Je me suis amusé à comparer deux images webcam de l'<a href="https://social.sciences.re/tags/%C3%A9ruption" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>éruption</span></a> qui a toujours lieu au <a href="https://social.sciences.re/tags/K%C4%ABlauea" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Kīlauea</span></a> (Hawaï). La première date du 26 mars, lors de l'épisode 15, et la seconde du 14 avril, c'est-à-dire de la période actuelle de quiescence entre les épisodes 17 et 18. Le niveau de zoom n'étant pas identique, j'ai dû utiliser quelques repères fixes (entourés en rouge) pour superposer les deux images. Le résultat n'est pas parfait, mais à quelques pixels près c'est pas mal ! Il suffit ensuite de jouer sur la transparence des calques pour mettre en évidence le changement de morphologie de l'évent nord entre les deux images.<br>Se pose évidemment le problème de l'échelle. Je n'ai pas trouvé d'info sur le diamètre de l'évent, ce qui aurait permis de quantifier ce changement de topographie. L'idéal serait de faire ce travail en reprenant les images depuis le premier épisode, afin de suivre toute l'évolution du cône, d'estimer des taux de construction, etc. Ça ferait un bon sujet pour un escl...stagiaire de master 2 tiens...</p>
