I've been using a laptop this week with 16gb of ram and have been surprisingly fine. My other, main laptop has 64gb. Granted most of my workloads have moved to my desktop with 128gb.

I didn't think there'd be that much of a difference between 8th and 11th gen Intel's, but it's definitely zippier. Not sure I'd ever be comfortable parting with my #thinkpad #T480. I sold my last one during the pandemic and missed it dearly.

I also probably wouldn't have as much hesitation making this my main laptop if it was a ThinkPad, but it's an HP #EliteBook.

HP EliteBook Ultra G1q Linux support under construction

Another Copilot+ PC, HP EliteBook Ultra G1q, is getting initial support for Linux, but this support is under construction as it won’t be merged to Linux 6.15. However, a future version of Linux could have better support for this laptop as we see improvements.

An HP EliteBook Ultra G1q contains a Snapdragon X Elite SoC to ensure that you have an AI powerhouse, complete with Microsoft’s Windows 11 and Copilot+ features that utilize AI. This AI laptop has a 14-inch screen to increase productivity. Furthermore, it uses ARM64 instead of the usual AMD64, which is expected from any Copilot+ PC.

Canonical is trying to get Linux to work with this laptop, but the device tree was incomplete because there may be errors when specifying the device parameters in the DTSI file. Expect certain features, such as audio, not working with Linux at this point.

However, in a future version of the Linux kernel, we’ll see more Copilot+ PCs, such as this one, being well supported. Right now, you can’t experience the full Linux desktop because there is no support for certain features, such as audio.

Tomorrow is the last day I have physical access to my Linux machine. Then the coworking place I have located my PC in, will be closed for #Nowruz holidays. And I will be stuck with my #HP #Elitebook laptop running #FreeBSD for 6 days straight. And it'll be my development machine. I have plans to setup #Tailscale to remotely access my PC(I hope their network admins won't mind!) which I have to finish tomorrow.

So the question is, how will be my FreeBSD days experience? Will I give up and install #Linux? For starters, I haven't found a GUI application to setup #Bluetooth headphones on my #BSD machine.

Have you got an #HP #Elitebook? How's its keyboard? I bought a second hand one and its keyboard is crap. Then I saw one or two Elitebooks in a saw and their keyboards were drastically different and better. Perhaps someone has swapped the original #keyboard of the #laptop I have?

There are 2 notable differences, first distance. And second that my elitebook keys are entirely flat.

HP #EliteBook 645 G11 (cheaper than G10 currently) with AMD Ryzen 5 CPU has its own issue as it comes with Realtek ethernet NIC & Mediatek WiFi card (could try to replace with Intel AX2[01]0 card at own expense+risk as they may not work) -- both would be worse than Intel versions due to lack of proper support in #FreeBSD (after Windows 11 would cease to get security updates).

Since IBM had stopped selling #refurbishedThinkPad, I do not know of any other outfit that would be as trustworthy, reliable, easy to work with returns (never had to return to IBM) to buy *refurbished* ‘puters from.

If you know of one that sells *refurbished* (not just used) Intel-based #ThinkPad [XT] or HP #EliteBook 6[45]0 G8+, do let me know.

I come across some on Amazon corp website while searching for things (in) new (condition); return periods & warranties had been terrible.

I am in #USA. More than likely than not packages would have be flown, which causes issue with buying spare batteries (ask FAA & Framework corp[0] but not me[1]).

I am not looking to buy a used laptop to clean, check connections, replace thermal paste, etc myself.

@grahamperrin From that codeberg link, looks like #FreeBSD can now boot on HP #EliteBook 650 G10 (after disabling "uart" hints at the loader prompt).

Could you say what is working & what is not? I am interested in ...
- (useful) power management (in the service of extending battery life);
- function & "insert" keys of the keyboard;
- mouse & buttons;
- WiFi card;
- graphics card;
- and the second SSD if you would have happened to try.

I'm upgrading an HP EliteBook 745 G6 laptop for a customer who is purchasing it from me.

I took out the 512GB SSD and replaced it with a 1TB nvme SSD. Took out the two 8GB memory modules and replaced them with two 16GB modules for 32GB. Of that, the AMD GPU reserves 2GB and has shared memory of 15GB. So the GPU has plenty of memory available to it for a little laptop.

The processor is a Ryzen 7 Pro 3700U

I've been selling more of these HP EliteBook laptops with Ryzen processors. I hope to put one to more testing, but selling them almost as fast as I get them in.

I think an ideal model for me to test is the 13 inch version of this model, the EliteBook 735 G6, as I think the 13 inch size is ideal for how I use a laptop (currently using a ThinkPad T470s and the 14 inch screen is just a bit too large for comfort with how I carry a laptop around).

There will be space+connection for only one SSD in the future laptop (HP #EliteBook640 (G10 datasheet: www8.hp.com/h20195/v2/GetDocum ; maintenance, service guide: kaas.hpcloud.hp.com/pdf-public )|Lenovo ThinkPad T14).

Is anyone using #FreeBSD in #dualBoot with #Windows11, each on its own partition on a single disk, scenario? If so ...
- how much space should be allocated for Windows & its updates?
- what would be the procedure to set up dual booting?

I could continue to use FreeBSD in a virtual machine as currently am, but the reports of people getting ads in Windows 11 make that terribly unappealing.

Oh, of course💡 alpha.polymaths.social/@rl_dan
reminded me about running Windows in a VM instead! So will aim for 1 TB, preferably 2-3 TB, SSD.

hardware would have to be properly supported by FreeBSD. 🤦🏽‍♂️Forgot that there was a catch for the fleeting sigh of relief😐

#hp #elitebook Today I had to call the hp support to get my non-booting laptop repaired. (fans spinning, nothing more).
First everything fine, but after telling them my hinge is also broken, they told me, the whole warranty is now void?! wtf.
my laptop is close to 2 years old with a 3 year warranty.
They want to send me a quote to charge me for the repair. Let's see what's coming.
But what should I do next? Go for the merchant which sold me the device?
