Ohio Senate passes higher education overhaul bill less than a day after eight hours of opponent testimony

S.B. 1 would ban diversity and inclusion efforts, prevent faculty from striking, set rules around classroom discussion, put diversity scholarships at risk, shorten university board of trustees terms from nine years down to six years, and require students take an American history course, among other things.

Regarding classroom discussion, it would set rules around topics involving “controversial beliefs” such as climate policies, electoral politics, foreign policy, diversity and inclusion programs, immigration policy, marriage, or abortion. #education #Ohio #USPol

click.actionnetwork.orgTake the Pledge: No Cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid! No one voted to cut Social Security. No one voted to cut Medicare. And no one voted for higher drug prices. But Donald Trump has empowered Elon Musk to slash the government to ribbons―and Musk has indicated that he’s willing to break Trump’s promises on Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Too many members of Congress have tried to play both sides when it comes to our Social Security system. Behind closed doors, especially to their donors, they talk about ways to weaken and undermine the system, culminating in reaching into our pockets and stealing our earned benefits. Then they campaign as loyal protectors who would never dream of touching these sacrosanct programs. We can’t let this doublespeak stand. We have to draw a line in the sand. Every member of Congress must take the pledge to stand with the American people, on the side of our Social Security system. There’s a good reason politicians don’t campaign on cutting Social Security: Ninety-two percent of Americans think that’s a terrible idea. That’s why Donald Trump spent millions on mailpieces to Pennsylvania voters claiming that Kamala Harris was destroying Social Security―even though Trump proposed billions in cuts to Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid in every budget he introduced as President. With the Trump administration planning trillions of dollars in new tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy and corporations, Elon Musk has been tasked with offsetting the cost through cuts. That’s why he’s got his knives out for Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Again and again, to politicians from both parties, we have insisted: Any changes to Social Security must happen through regular Congressional order, in the light of day―not in some closed-door commission. Tell every member of Congress: Take the pledge not to cut Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid!

Oklahoma's Gov Stitt finally takes a stand against one of Ryan Walter's ridiculous policies: mandating the state collect school children's immigration status.

The public GOP-on-GOP spat may be instructive in how this dysfunctional GOP (hopefully) eventually falls apart. Meanwhile, Oklahoma's children's education continues to fall behind.

click.actionnetwork.orgTell Congress: Vote NO on H.R. 899 and Protect Public Education! House Republicans just introduced H.R. 899, a bill that would completely eliminate the U.S. Department of Education. They’ve introduced H.R. 899, a bill that would completely eliminate the U.S. Department of Education. That means no more federal student loans, no protections for students with disabilities, and no national oversight for equal education access. This is an attack on millions of students, teachers, and families. The Department of Education manages over $1 trillion in federal student aid, including the backbone of student aid programs like Pell Grants, work-study programs, and income-driven repayment plans. Eliminating it would leave millions in limbo, making college even more unaffordable. States will be left scrambling, inequality will skyrocket, and education will become a privilege for the wealthy, not a right for all. It’s not just about student loans. The Department of Education is responsible for ensuring students with disabilities get the resources they need and enforcing Title IX protections against discrimination and sexual harassment. Without it, states would be left to make their own rules, meaning Republican-led states could gut public education funding, eliminate resources for students with disabilities, and roll back or slash protections entirely for LGBTQ+ students. Democrats are not powerless to stop this. If House Democrats vote united, then they only need to peel off 3 Republicans -- and there are more than two dozen House Republicans in swing districts nationwide. If the bill does pass the House, Senate Democrats can block it using the filibuster. But unity among Democrats is never guaranteed and every member of Congress needs to know where the American public stands. Every student, no matter their background, deserves equal opportunities, but H.R. 899 would send us back decades. Congress must hear us loud and clear. Click ‘START WRITING’ to sign and send an urgent direct message demanding your U.S. House Representative reject this radical assault on public education and vote against any attempt to abolish the Department of Education now!
