The first Apple Watch was introduced 1995.
It's #contemporary #design is standing out after 30 years, still. While it was deeply integrated into #MacOS System 7.5, it's not one of their digital #gadgets. This #anniversary seems to be perfect to revisit and redraw some shacky lines and seconds in corporate #history of #AppleComputers.

#Apple lost me as #proUser when they rejected my third warranty case in a row.
To rebuild the #AppleWatch from scratch in #vectorgraphics I prefer #Inkscape #SVG #copyleft on #Linux #FOSS over #Adobe #Illustrator #Ai #IP #copyright #software.

Go get the best #vector #designer #app
https://inkscape.org
and you can draw freely #retrocomputer #illustrations like we do.

@bkuhn any advice for choosing for code?

In a recent thread you mentioned and I'm curious about templating.

In my understanding it's not possible for the user to replace just the LGPLd library on their system, so it's effectively the same as .
I chose 2.0 instead.

Same problem exists in C++ template-only libraries, but I found no ultimate guide.

Are you aware of any?

You all have the right to write , and you write whatever you want.

And when you look at what software other people are writing, keep it in mind, that they have the right to write whatever software they feel like.

They even have all rights to license it under or licenses, because everyone has the right to make objectively wrong decisions, too 😂

Now #uutil is going to replace #coreutils ? Not trusting that one bit.

The core utilities of any given #operatingsystem, as well as the kernel, display protocol, etc, etc, etc should NEVER be up to #liberal #licensing like #MIT or #BSD.

For total power to the user, the fundamental technological stack should be #copyleft, because we should have #legal expectations towards vendors.

This is also from the system that brought you #snaps. #canonical wants a #walledgarden and it shows.

Continued thread

#Copyleft means "power to the user". That is certain expectations are #legally expected of companies and organizations that partake in the code, and those expectations are levied in the users interests.

That is you are expected to contribute back improvements and not put them behind a paywall. This makes #copyleft is anti #freemium by default.

There are plenty of companies that try to slip one by, but in the fundamental software that's in all of our computers? That's historically a bad idea.

Watching a video that makes a bad case against #uutils - so here I go.

I don't care if you run #commercial #software like #videogames and #musicsoftware , because certain software is so huge and complex that it requires return on investment.

There's also something to be said for #MIT and #BSD licenses in general software, #CC even.

But when it comes to the fundamental software you run, like kernel or essential userland commands, it's gotta be #GPL - if not some other #copyleft license. Why?

This is a strawman.

People are (rightly) upset at billionaries stealing both from the commons and from everybody else.

The problem is that right now #copyright (that backs #copyleft) and #dataprotection (#GDPR and so on...) are the only (weak) shield people have to fight back.

They are in fact too weak.

We need a total ridefinition of #PublicDomain, turing the default to a strongly protected #common that can be used freely but only to produce more content (#software, #art...) under the same public domain regime.

We need to turn unprotected #commons to an exception.

And we need stronger data protection and privacy laws, that grant people the right to be paid for any abuse of their data an exponentially growing amount (say 1€ for the first bit, 2€ for the second, 4€ for the third and so on).

Finally, we need to get rid of billionaries. Hopefully, without too much violence.

Funny, because MIT Press, like most publishers, do even worse to start with. Let's say you want to publish in the Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience:

"By your signature below, you hereby grant to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) all your right, title, and interest including copyright in and to the Article."

Ah, they want my copyrights. OK then I suppose they'll pay me for that? No:

"An APC of $1000 is assessed by JoCN for every accepted manuscript".

With that sum I could buy more equipment for our research.

So MIT want me to *pay them* to *give them* my copyrights.

And do MIT Press pay their reviewers for their review work? – Guess the answer...

What we need is a successful action on the part of the academic community to shut down these leeches of work and money.

Long live LibGen!

I want every program that’s required to participate productively in society to be #FreeSoftware

Because Free Software allows me to avoid direct remote control of what I can do. And it enables me to help others with my #programming skills.

That’s why I think we need #copyleft. Ideally the #AGPL, because only that keeps webservices free. And those are programs, too.

(a discussion got me thinking why I contribute to FLOSS projects; besides wanting to share what I create, this is the reason)

Your point about resources is apt. Larry Rosen argued since 1990s: FOSS licenses needed attorney's fees clauses. I still disagree w/ him, but it'd've solved our enforcement problem (& created many others).
Based on 25 years of enforcing #copyleft, I witnessed in the early days, no one imagined that software companies would ignore a license's requirements (be it FOSS or proprietary). I know that sounds so naïve today, but it was a core belief of FOSS enthusiasts in the early days.
