In spring the temple's beautiful shidarezakura erupt in an explosion of pinks.
The famed poet Saigyō (西行法師 1118-90), who loved cherry blossoms and wrote countless poems about them, is said to have visited the temple numerous times to illicitly meet Empress Taikenmon'in (待賢門院).

Yaezakura | Multi-Layered Cherry Blossom

#Yaezakura which means “multi-layered cherry blossom,” is a catch-all term for cherry blossoms with more than five petals. Starting to bloom in mid-to-late April, yaezakura have petals that range from light to dark pink. Because of the double layers of petals, they are known as a symbol of strength — in comparison to the delicate and fleeting Somei Yoshino.

📍Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan 🇯🇵 (2023)

"Flower Power" (2019) by Yinka Shonibare CBE, captured at the Fukuoka Art Museum.
A striking fusion of beauty and violence: instead of bullets, a rifle releases a cascade of cherry blossoms.
Dressed in vibrant African-inspired fabrics and bearing a globe for a head, the figure reflects on colonial histories, cultural hybridity, and global identity.
