The two-part episode "Past Tense", which aired in the third season of #StarTrek: #DeepSpaceNine. In this episode, #Sisko, #Bashir, and #Dax are accidentally transported to #SanFrancisco in the year #2024, where they find a #dystopian #society where the #poor and #homeless are #segregated in walled-off #ghettos called #SanctuaryDistricts. Sisko and Bashir get trapped in one of these districts, while Dax is rescued by a wealthy businessman. Sisko realizes that they have arrived just before the Bell Riots, a violent uprising that will change the course of history and lead to social reforms. However, he also learns that the man who was supposed to lead the riots, Gabriel Bell, has been killed, and he decides to take his place to preserve the timeline.

This episode is widely regarded as one of the best and most relevant episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, as it explores themes such as #IncomeInequality, #homelessness, #SocialJustice, and #HumanRights. The episode also draws parallels between the 2020s and the 1990s, when it was produced, as well as the present day. The episode depicts a world where #technology has advanced but society has regressed, where people are divided by #class and #race, and where #violence and #oppression are rampant. The episode also shows how people can make a difference by #StandingUp for their #rights and #dignity, and how #history can be shaped by ordinary people.

It’s often thought of as a utopian setting, more or less, which is true. But us #Trekkies, who are steeped in the lore, know that there’s a fair bit of dystopia in the Trek timeline. And that dystopia hits around… right now, actually. And if you watched a particular two-parter in #DS9, well… yeaaaaaaaah.
