TomKrajci 🇺🇦 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️<p>Glider antennae for the FLARM collision alert system ... where to put them?</p><p>I have three antennae to worry about: GPS, ADS-B, and FLARM A. (FLARM B is an external antenna on the bottom of the fuselage.)</p><p>They can't be too close to each other. The blue strip of aluminum taped to the nose shows the notional canopy inner surface, so there is not much height available. Fortunately, the instrument bay top cover is fiberglass is radio transparent. If I have to drill a hole to set the tallest antenna a bit lower, that's not all that terrible.</p><p>Note, for proper antenna polarization the dipoles must be vertical.</p><p>Considering all the other antennae I have (transponder and its GPS, radio, infotainment system, SSMIS download and HAM relay), I'm starting to feel like this airplane:<br><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_RC-135" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_R</span><span class="invisible">C-135</span></a></p><p>At least I don't need a long wire HF antenna. Woo hoo!</p><p>After configuring the device, I put it through some initial tests.</p><p>Even in the garage the GPS antenna can get a position fix.</p><p>Applying higher or lower pressure to the static port on the transponder shows a corresponding change on the displayed altitude.</p><p>Applying pitot tube air pressure to the squat switch changes the transponder mode from ground to airborne, which is what we want.</p><p>Note: I can't test the radio/antenna/transmission capabilities in the garage. Woo hoo!</p><p>1st photo - XCsoar software has been loaded, showing a map and terrain data for New Mexico. (Airspace boundaries I'll add tomorrow.) No GPS data at the moment.</p><p>2nd photo - FLARM powered up, green status light...so it's got a GPS fix. Now to configure the glide computer to receive the FLARM data...GPS position as well as info on nearby aircraft. This is a debugging screen that shows I'm getting a meaningful data stream.</p><p>3rd photo - now the map is properly located because we have a GPS fix.</p><p>4th photo - Even with antennae casually draped over the fuselage, I'm getting ADS-B data of airliners miles away!</p><p>I also tested the three pneumatic inputs to the glide computer: pitot, static, total energy. TomKrajci 🇺🇦 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️<p>Aircraft and glider transponder codes - FAA gotcha.</p><p>I have not yet received my glider registration from the FAA (any day now, lol!), but they have assigned a transponder code for the N-number I have reserved. (see first screenshot)</p><p>To configure my avionics, I need to load this transponder code into the device.</p><p>FLARM wants it as a 24-bit hexadecimal value. (Each hexadecimal value is 4 bits in binary...so it's going to be a six-character code...but my code is not six characters.)</p><p>Hmmmm, that number the FAA gave me just doesn't seem correct.</p><p>I then called up a known, long-registered aircraft to compare their transponder code. (2nd screenshot)</p><p>Surprise! The transponder code I was given was in octal, but not labeled as such. TomKrajci 🇺🇦 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️<p>Successful test of the glider radio.</p><p>It receives, transmits, and I adjusted microphone sensitivity to better match the mic.</p><p>While I was at it, I also measure current draw in standby, receive/audio, and transmit modes. (I need to know my energy budget so that I can choose the correct size battery...especially for long flights.)</p><p>Moving around the yard with a handheld radio and using the cell phone to audio record its output...I can't do a proper range test. TomKrajci 🇺🇦 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️<p>Installing and connecting various glider instruments and avionics.</p><p>Electric wires are involved, and also pneumatic tubing.</p><p>This is the wiring harness for the transponder. The control head, to be mounted on the instrument panel, is already connected to the wiring harness. Two other electronic units will be connected to the harness: the transponder, and a precision GPS receiver that provides position information that will be part of the transponder messages.</p><p>The red and black wires are for 12VDC power.
