Wild, turns out that the Apple Pencil 1st gen works on much newer ipads, no need to buy the 2nd generation.
Even if iOS doesn't "allow" it, there's a workaround that involves using #lightblue app

I wanted to thank everyone for their suggestions! We decided to go with the overwhelming favorite recommendation, #iPadPro with a #ApplePencil2 and #Procreate. That seems to also be the closest experience to painting with watercolors on paper.
I want to learn how to use it too. Hopefully I can eventually post some art (I dabbled in watercolors years ago for fun after taking a class at the local junior college).
