A very sharp bit of design work that is often criticised for being less than it was ever designed to be. In cabriolet form it’s a smart little people’s car ready for some sunshine cruising.

Today, we’re looking at the Zastava Yugo 45. Zasatava manufactured a number of different Fiat models under licence. It started selling cars to its own designs in the 1980s, although these continued to rely on Fiat components and technology. The Yugo branding reflected Zastava’s role as the former Yugoslavia’s main car maker. These sold surprisingly well in the US for a while. I captured this 1988 car at the 2024 Festival of the Unexceptional.

This is the Yugo Sana. The Sana - also badged as the Florida in some markets, reflecting the marque’s previous unlikely success in North America - was sold in the UK between 1988 and 1992. It was manufactured in the former Yugoslavia by Zastava, traditionally a maker of Fiats under licence, and early Sanas had Fiat engines. Design by Giugiaro. Snapped at last year’s Festival of the Unexceptional.

The high-legged monitor comes from the Serbian company EI Niš. In our collection, we have two such specimens.
