Lintu äänteli isosti: äänen volyymi on ihan omaa luokkaansa, verrattuna muihin uikkulajeihimme, kuten silkki- ja mustakurkku-uikkuun. Katselin ympärilleni, josko kumppani olisi ruovikossa, mutta kukaan ei vastannut. Tällainen ulkoasu on uikuilla soidintaessa parin kassa, ja vaikka härkälinnun asu vaikuttaa vaatimattomalta muihin uikkuihin verrattuna, kumppaniin se tehnee suuren vaikutuksen! Lähellä uiskentelivat nokikana ja telkkä, jotta kenellehän härkälintu viestitteli ja mitä kertoi...

Kurkipari on ollut kärsivällinen, kun yksinäinen kurki, ehkä heidän edellisvuotinen poikasensa, on hakenut seuraa ja ruokaillut yhdessä niiden kanssa. Usein tuntuu olevan kuitenkin ahdasta ja kurki saa taas kerran karkotuksen. Pyrstösulkiin tarttuminen on tehokas keino, kuten joutsenilla... Pesintää ja poikasia varten tarvitsee olla tilaa ja tarpeeksi ravintoa, että jälkikasvulla on mahdollisuus selviytyä hengissä. Niinpä "ylimääräiset" lajitoverit tai kilpailijat karkoitetaan reviiriltä.

The common crane pair has been patient with a lone crane, perhaps their chick from last year, who has sought their company and eaten with them. Often times pair feel that lone crane should leave and is expelled. Grabbing the tail feathers is an effective method, as with swans... There needs to be enough space for breeding and food for the offspring to have them a chance to survive. So "extra" cranes or competitors are expelled from the territory.

Merimetso voi sukeltaa jopa 10 metrin syvyyteen ja pysyä veden alla yli 2 minuuttia, joten kalastajina ne ovat todella taitavia. Merimetson kohdalla on kyllä erikoista, että täysin vesilintuna, sen höyhenpuku ei kestä pitkään vedessä olemista. Sen täytyy tasaisin väliajoin kuivatella siipiään, että voi taas sukeltaa ravinnon perään...

Cormorants can dive to depths of up to 10 meters and stay underwater for over 2 minutes, making them very skilled fishing birds. Special thing about the cormorant is that, while being a fully aquatic bird, its plumage can't withstand being in the water for long. It must dry its wings at regular intervals so that it can dive again for food.

Kalastuksen ja pummimisen jalot taidot! Niitä nuoret merikotkat nyt harjoittelevat, häirittyjen merimetsojen kalasaalita anastaen, kun aikuiset linnut ovat enimmäkseen poissa maisemista. Ne lienee rakentavat pesää tuleville poikasille sun muuta. Tässä kuvasarja, miten nuoremmalta linnulta viedään saalis lennossa, muutamassa sekunnissa. Homma näyttää vaaralliselta, mutta linnut eivät vahingoita toisiaan.

Learning skills of fishing and robbing oher's catch! Young white-tailed eagles have been training survival skills along the winter, now disturbing migrated cormorants and stealing their fish or from other eagle. Adult white-tailed eagles are probably building nests and preparing for breeding, and are rarely seen in this place. Photo serie shows how in a few seconds an older bird steals pray from a younger one in flight. The event looks dangerous, but they don't harm each other.

A species of dove that disappeared from the wild more than 50 years ago has been bred at a National Trust site near Bicester.
The aviary team at Waddesdon Manor, just over the Oxfordshire border in Buckinghamshire, successfully bred the Socorro dove, which became extinct in the wild in the 1970s.
Two chicks, known as squabs, were hatched in August 2024, marking the first successful breeding of the species at the site.

Excerpt: "The CDC report details two confirmed cases of indoor domestic cats contracting bird flu, with both felines belonging to #DairyWorkers who had previously displayed symptoms consistent with the virus. Prior to the cats becoming ill, their owners had experienced symptoms including #vomiting and #diarrhea. Although the owners declined testing for bird flu, laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of the virus in both cats, with one eventually dying from the infection.

"This finding represents a significant development in our understanding of #AvianInfluenza #transmission, as it suggests that #humans may serve as intermediary hosts capable of passing the virus to household pets. Previously, most concern centered on direct transmission from infected birds to mammals, but these cases indicate more complex transmission patterns may exist.

"The indoor setting of these infections is particularly noteworthy, as it eliminates the possibility of direct contact with infected #WildBirds, which had been considered the primary transmission route for cats in previous outbreaks."

"Animal experts are warning people to protect their pets and farm animals from bird flu infection as migratory birds make their way across Washington State.

"Amber Betts with the Washington State Department of Agriculture tells us there are currently six million birds migrating across the United States, many of which will fly through Washington state as they head to Canada.

"She said with this current strain of avian influenza, #MigratoryBirds and #WildBirds are the main distributors when it comes to spreading the disease.

"'There’s different species that can have the virus without symptoms and then others if they get it it’s not good for them,' Betts said.

"Betts tells us bird flu kills chickens very quickly once they are infected but many wild birds will not only survive with the disease, they may not even show symptoms.

"She says the sick wild birds will fly across states and countries, infecting entire sections of land with susceptible chickens, ducks, and birds as they go.

"'It can live on surfaces for quite some time,' Betts said. 'If there’s a shared water source and an infected bird drinks out of that and then another bird drinks it, the disease can be shared that way and through droppings.'

"She tells us there are precautionary measures that can be taken to prevent the spread.

"'Make sure the water or food we leave out for our backyard birds is under a cover and not accessible by wild birds. Make sure they don’t have access to a pond where our birds have access as well as the wild birds.' Betts said.

"There have already been at least six confirmed cases of pet cats testing positive for avian flu in [#WashingtonState].

"'That’s the reason we are concerned every time we see migration season coming upon us,' Betts said.

She said the best practice is keeping your pets from drinking any standing water and farm animals away from fields with bird droppings is the best way to prevent them from getting sick."
