Morning. Last Sunday we went to Amberly, Sussex, to celebrate our youngests birthday. She had an unexpected present when she spotted a white tailed eagle. Another great reintroduction story. The village and downs are accessible by train from London. Lovely walking country. #daysOut #nature #WhiteTailedEagle
White-tailed eagle
I climbed the approximately 2,000 steps in Vega, having just eaten a banana. The mountain further up was shrouded in fog when suddenly, a white-tailed eagle appeared! I immediately dropped the banana peel and grabbed my camera. The eagle was still reasonably close, so I quickly aimed the camera. The white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla) grows to a length of up to 92 cm and has a wingspan of up to 240 cm. It was formerly endangered, but thanks to good conservation efforts, it is no longer threatened. Its diet consists primarily of fish, but it also occasionally feeds on birds such as grey geese, mammals, or carrion.
White-tailed eagles a few hours ago – these were not on my bingo cards this morning. I walked along the Helsinki coastline today and stopped at the Iso Huopalahti bay for a moment. There were a lot of terns fishing. Suddenly something spooked the local ducks. Naturally I started looking around, and sure enough, there was an old white-tailed eagle above me. A hooded crow flew towards the eagle and started harassing it. I followed the eagle through the viewfinder of my camera, and suddenly another old white-tailed eagle entered the frame out of nowhere
Nowadays these huge eagles are not an unusual sight in Helsinki thanks to decades of concerted conservation efforts.
Unfortunately, the #WhiteTailedEagle's nest is quite a distance away, so yesterday I used the 1.4 extender for the first time and it actually helps to capture the birds better. The air turbulence was kept to a minimum, but there wasn't much light – after all, I'm shooting at f/11.
Next time, I'll try using the 2x converter + monopod. The f/16 aperture will be a challenge.
White-tailed eagle hunting its natural prey: a jumbo jet. Unfortunately, it was so far away that I was unable to photograph the eagle seizing its prey.

Learning skills of fishing and robbing oher's catch! Young white-tailed eagles have been training survival skills along the winter, now disturbing migrated cormorants and stealing their fish or from other eagle. Adult white-tailed eagles are probably building nests and preparing for breeding, and are rarely seen in this place. Photo serie shows how in a few seconds an older bird steals pray from a younger one in flight. The event looks dangerous, but they don't harm each other.
