Thor A. Hopland<p>Okay, <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/WebSocial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WebSocial</span></a>.<br>Alright, <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fediverse</span></a>. <br>Hei hei, <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/Allheimen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Allheimen</span></a>. </p><p>I got a question for ya...</p><p>Do you piss<br>in the shower?</p><p>Seriously,<br>I need to know.<br>Sincerely.</p><p>🙏</p>
Thor A. Hopland<p>I've not been active on the <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fediverse</span></a> (or <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/WebSocial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WebSocial</span></a>) lately, largely because my healing project has come to it's final stages. So I did the one thing I shouldn't have done, and that's get back on <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/Facebook" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Facebook</span></a>. Why?</p><p><a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/Norway" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Norway</span></a> is a Facebook country. If you want any connections or contact with people, it's all usually done through Facebook.</p><p>That being said, my dreams of converting people over is still a goal of mine. But, I want to defeat the beast from within.</p><p>I'll keep you posted.</p>
Thor A. Hopland<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://snabelen.no/@dentyske" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>dentyske</span></a></span> "get them while they're young".</p><p>Popularity leads to "monopoly by default", which is what <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/OpenSource" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenSource</span></a> has been fighting for ages.</p><p>People are creatures of habits, and once they've learned something, facing new learning curves to replace that something is less viable.</p><p>The problem with dating apps however can't be solved by something like <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/WebSocial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WebSocial</span></a> (formerly the <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fediverse</span></a>), because it requires the privacy that a public protocol can't provide.</p><p>Nobody has tried to solve this problem.</p>
Thor A. Hopland<p>Today I got new inspiration regarding <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/WebSocial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WebSocial</span></a> (aka the <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/Fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Fediverse</span></a>), when I met an old acquaintance and his friend</p><p>The acquaintance tried to call me a <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/TechBro" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>TechBro</span></a>. With some salt, and sugar, I explained what a tech bro was, why I despised them and rolled out a simple explanation of what <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/Mastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Mastodon</span></a> was.</p><p>His friend was surprised and said he didn't know that such a thing existed. My acquaintance then said he wanted to start his own server.</p><p>I then realized he's probably not the only one in my city.</p>
Thor A. Hopland<p>You stare in awe and disbelief as the child one more time, after many attempts, place their hand on the oven element. "*sigh*... that searing pain? Thor A. Hopland<p>When it comes to <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/literature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>literature</span></a>, I'm no literati. Thor A. Hopland<p>(7/7) In short, we say <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/WebSocial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WebSocial</span></a> instead of the <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/Fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Fediverse</span></a> to truly unlock the potential of what it can be, and that is a communication system built on top of established, decentralized technology, under the umbrella of none other than <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/W3C" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>W3C</span></a>.</p><p>By unpoliticizing the word, we've basically given it verbage and actual purpose. Are you going to post content on <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/WebSocial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WebSocial</span></a> with <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/ActivityPub" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ActivityPub</span></a>? How will you do it? Single user? Multi user? Actual platform?</p><p>Giving creators that power can foster magic.</p>
Thor A. Hopland<p><a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/WebSocial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WebSocial</span></a> and <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/ActivityPub" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ActivityPub</span></a> is the future for the <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/web" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>web</span></a>, as any other web <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/technology" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>technology</span></a>, but we must also see how it can be used to create more diversity and opportunity.</p><p>Of course some of you are twitching, because now you're afraid of <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/ActivitySpam" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ActivitySpam</span></a>. It can't be helped though. At some junction that's just going to be a problem no matter what. </p><p>The point is Web Social is a tool to interact with other sites, with audiences, as well as users. Communicating like this encompasses it's purpose.</p>
Thor A. Hopland<p>This way, when I do promotional stuff for the web in future, I'll be taking into account that a domain can be project specific, like say a film that needs promotional static website, and that you don't want to run anything heavy here - because it needs to run for a long time.</p><p>But you might want the facade of <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/WebSocial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WebSocial</span></a>. Like a site having tops 10 posts in it's lifetime - and that's it. All comment functions, all interactive parts of <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/ActivityPub" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ActivityPub</span></a> are non functional because it was a one off.</p>
Thor A. Hopland<p>The job of <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/WebSocial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WebSocial</span></a> is put squarely in the lap of companies that do <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/WebDesign" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WebDesign</span></a> and <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/SysOps" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SysOps</span></a> - where it always belonged. It's apart of the giant <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/Web" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Web</span></a> that we all use everyday.</p><p>It's more typified, normalized and familiar and can then also be viewed in a utilitarian way, in that <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/ActivityPub" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ActivityPub</span></a> provides a public broadcasting function via the web.</p><p>Yes inbox, yes outbox, but no braining. Stahp!</p><p>Web Social is a broadcast system for the web, where users could communicate with each other.</p><p>Das it.</p>
Thor A. Hopland<p>A <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/platform" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>platform</span></a>, is a platform, is a platform. The user don't care. </p><p>What is that, a <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/CSR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CSR</span></a> on <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/serverless" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>serverless</span></a>, an <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/SSR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SSR</span></a> hooked up to a <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/VPS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VPS</span></a> - or maybe you even manage your own <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/kubernetes" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>kubernetes</span></a>. Daring, aren't we?</p><p>For some people, this is all static. But, they know what the <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/web" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>web</span></a> is. They know that it's where the crawlers live.</p><p>When I look at this chart, I think <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/WebSocial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WebSocial</span></a> has a ring to it that might project "Other" into the top 5 - maybe even top 3.</p><p>Why?</p>
Thor A. Hopland<p>(1/7) I have to remember to stop using the hashtag <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fediverse</span></a>, because we're supposed to say <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/WebSocial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WebSocial</span></a> now instead. Why does that matter? </p><p>Language and optics go hand in hand, and as times have revealed, federation might not be the silver bullet people believe it to be, nor does it actually condense what the underlying technology is about.</p><p>We've essentially created a jungle telegraph in protocol form, that can take <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/ActivityPub" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ActivityPub</span></a> into a weird and wonderful future.</p>

Thor A. Hopland<p>It doesn't seem like it's viable unless you implement a sort of social score to just weed out malicious or incompetent users, giving a "reviewer" status to people who can take part in "moderating the moderators" and revoking it from people who are disqualified - or who becomes disqualified.</p><p>I know it sounds bonkers, but implemented on the vendor side - like a publisher, blog, game platform, etc - rather than as a part of <a href="https://snabelen.no/tags/WebSocial" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WebSocial</span></a> fabric means it's isolated and innocuous.
