donkey herder, fowl friend<p>A very good article about a very depressing subject. This is an economic catastrophe that’s just a year or two behind* in WA than in CA - when I say we left California because we lost faith in it, it’s this kind of thing. <br>If you’re not American, this is the cultural background: almost all residential properties, from apartment complexes to oligarch ski cabins, are mortgaged. All mortgages that I’ve ever heard of require the property to be insured. Now the wildland-urban interface fires are so frequent and so destructive that the insurance companies are all declining to cover them - State Farm and Nationwide, iirc, have stopped writing new policies in California, period. And now the rot has spread to Washington, too. The center cannot hold. <br>*edit typo<br><a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/wildfires" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wildfires</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/WUIFires" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WUIFires</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/ClimateCrisis" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ClimateCrisis</span></a><br><a href="https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/times-watchdog/how-wildfire-risk-scoring-puts-wa-homeowners-in-insurance-jeopardy/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">seattletimes.com/seattle-news/</span><span class="invisible">times-watchdog/how-wildfire-risk-scoring-puts-wa-homeowners-in-insurance-jeopardy/</span></a></p>
