Skype lakkautetaan toukokuussa 2025

AfterDawn · Microsoft lakkauttaa SkypenBy Petteri Pyyny

I found myself using Skype for the first time in years a few months ago and it absolutely saved the day. Microsoft merging it into what is perhaps their all-time worst ever application* makes me wonder about good alternatives.

So what is the best simple, reliable, privacy respecting, PAYG, international VOIP service?

(*every morning a random colleague would be late for standup due to needing to reboot their Mac to “fix” Teams)

Six Colors · Microsoft to finally hang up on Skype
More from Dan Moren

The Skype protocol is a proprietary network used for Internet telephony. Its specifications are not publicly available, and all official applications based on the protocol are closed-source.

It's the end of an era as Microsoft is set to shutdown Skype in favour of Microsoft Teams on May 5, 2025. Skype was a major part of the 2000s internet and was later acquired by Microsoft in 2011.

Although usage has declined over the years, it was still a large part of internet history and will be missed.

Not so fun fact: when I arrived in the US, I couldn't get a phone number, so I got a Skype VoIP number.

It's been incredibly useful for avoiding spam, but now it’s everywhere.

I even use it for some of my 2FA! Updating or moving it out would be painful.

Microsoft is pulling the plug on Skype in May, encourages users to migrate to Teams

Long before there was Zoom, FaceTime, Teams, and whatever Google’s decided to call its voice and video calling service this week, there was Skype. When it first launched in 2003 as a way to make voice calls over the internet using peer-to-peer technology, Skype evolved into a voice and video calling system used by millions.

Microsoft has owned Skype since 2011, but the company hasn’t done […]

Ah, shit. Anyone know of a VoIP or other service that's any good for calling a landline in Japan from the UK that isn't eye-wateringly expensive?

My partner was one of the few active users of Skype because it was cheap and (mostly) reliable for this purpose.

Edit: thanks everyone for the suggestions so far. To clarify one thing - anything requiring tech or software at the Japanese parent's end is a non-starter. It's one way only.

#Digital Voice switchover cut off 95-year-old's landline

My 95-year-old friend is in distress. His #landline has stopped working & he’s told by his provider #EE that he may need to accept a new phone number to get his service back

He lives alone & relies on his phone for human contact

It will be a challenge for him to let people know his new number and he risks being cut off from #medical #communications
