New arcade game: Two Ton School Run
"You're going to drive your kids 400m to the school at the top, safely protected by your 2 tonne four wheel drive SUV. All you have to do is get there without hitting anything."
"Wicked, you're a seriously bad parent".

When I went for my morning walk today, someone was driving on a residential road used as a school drop-off staring at her phone in her hand.

I will never not stop refrain from sharing my possibly most favourite video series - "The Secret Life of Components" by

If you ever saw the old TV series "The Secret Life of Machines" twenty years ago, this is the very same Tim Hunkin sharing all that he has learned about using sensors, chain, glue and so on and so on.

If you did not, you *still* need to watch this. It's just all around brilliant. Here's the introduction episode:

Had an enjoyable visit to Novelty Automation in London last week. There are lots of lovely machines there. Here are four of them.

1/ The "Is it art?" machine assessing my penknife.
2/ "Travel by tube" features a beggar and a dog lady.
3/ A "pong" video game, controlled by pedalling forwards or backwards to move the bat up or down the screen.
4/ The "instant weight loss" machine. After telling you your body mass index is too high it cooks and delivers a nourishing single grain of popcorn.

We watched Tim Hunkin's fun video (original from c.1987) on fax machines, and when he got to the bit where he and the late Rex Garrod demonstrated how they send messages over long distances, I knew, without a shadow of a doubt, Terry Pratchett had watched this too, and that it was at least partly the inspiration for the clacks.

And I was both happy and sad at the same time.
