WASHINGTON (AP) — "The Education Department will begin collection next month on student loans that are in default, including the garnishing of wages for potentially millions of borrowers, officials said Monday.

"Currently, roughly 5.3 million borrowers are in default on their federal student loans.

"The Trump administration ’s announcement marks an end to a period of leniency that began during the COVID-19 pandemic. No federal student loans have been referred for collection since March 2020, including those in default. Under President Joe Biden, the Education Department tried multiple times to give broad forgiveness of student loans, only to be stopped by courts.

" 'American taxpayers will no longer be forced to serve as collateral for irresponsible student loan policies,' #EducationSecretary #LindaMcMahon said.

"Beginning May 5, the department will begin involuntary collection through the Treasury Department’s offset program, which withholds government payments — including tax refunds, federal salaries and other benefits — from people with past-due debts to the government. After a 30-day notice, the department also will begin garnishing wages for borrowers in default.

"The decision to send debt to collections drew criticism from advocates, who said borrowers had experienced whiplash and confusion with the changing student loan policies between the Biden and Trump administrations."

I'm no expert but Austerity doesn't seem to grow anything except poverty, inequality, and the bank accounts of the very richest (likely off shore to avoid tax on the interest). Certainly not economies.

While going through work's mandatory anti-bribery training I've noticed one thing. What's considered bribery and very illegal for us plebs is ok and considered standard operating procedure for high-ranking gov. officials, the Supreme Court, large corporations, and the rich.

So husb + I just had conversation about #homelessness, cost of living, #mentalhealth, hopelessness and the #inhumanity that is raging out of control around the world.

"#Therich don't care about the poor anymore. They look after themselves and #thepoor can just go away and die for all they care" he says.

I reply "Nobody cares about ppl struggling anymore. How many ppl would give a friend $1000 or real-deal support if they needed it. We have a niece with 3 kids struggling on her own and you (my husb) don't help your own flesh and blood" .. but he knows I send $$$ over to UK for her.

So how many ppl DO really care? Do even help family or close friends? So how surprising is it the world is like it is? Meagre support for #NDIS community, the #aged, #homeless, #refugees, the helpless in #Ukraine, #Gaza...

We need to look at ourselves first if the world is to build HEART, not fear and loathing of others-not-like-us

in 2003, jamie johnson (one of the young heirs of the j&j fortune) made a doc called "born rich", about being born into wealth.

it's actually a very interesting documentary that includes interviews with some of his fellow "born rich" friends (including a young ivanka, who's actually very thoughtful).

i don't know anything about that world, so i wouldn't even know about the pressures that come with it. the main impression i got is that a young person born into a wealthy family is sort of trapped by it. they are aware that the family's $ is more important than they are, and that if they fuck up, the money will be cut off.

like many people, i've often wondered why rich people don't just share a bit more, but the impression i get is that in their world, if you're a "flight risk", you won't get anywhere near family money. your sibling (or cousin or whoever) who *wants* to keep things in the family will position themselves to ensure that they do.

anyway, i'm not saying "poor little rich kid", but this documentary definitely helped me see how even "young richies with a conscience of any kind" are in a much more complicated situation than it might seem from the outside.

in other words, keep sharpening your guillotines, comrades, because there will be no "persuading the richies to part with some of their wealth".

It's called "mankind" because #humans are naturally prone to being selfless and caring. The greedy ones are an anomaly and need to pay their fair share.
