WoolpunkBoat goo (mold and moisture)

#theBoatyard #norway

Peter Burka
#Electrical question: I disconnected the negative wire for our 12V bilge pump, but if I measure voltage from the positive line to the now-dangling negative line, I see between 0.5 and 1.1V. Does this mean there's a short, or is it expected somehow? #boatyard #theBoatyard

Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar
Belatedly found someone to host the Bavaria (sailboat) forums and he's got them back up and running, hooray, despite #Ofcom threats. He's optimistic about this and hopefully ready to deal with any legal bullshit coming this way.

Which means I get to be a mere participant, offer boaty advice and point out bad shit people do to their boats 😆

#Bavaria #Sailing #TheBoatyard #WebForum

Alexander Cobleigh
doing some improvements to the dinghy as of this week, this was the start of making a tiller impeder!

if it works in practice, it would let me keep the rudder fixed while i go to the fore and e.g. hoist/pull down sails. it can also be fractionally set to alleviate weather helm (i.e. less force on the tiller in lively water) without completely locking the rudder

https://woodenboat.org.au/huntingford-helm-impeder/
#theBoatyard

Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar
@barbapiccola Typical boat stuff. Fine seawater spray gets absolutely everywhere, then causes corrosion, which causes high resistance and then heat. You can avoid all that by greasing the contact area. The grease is displaced when inserting any friction fitting (connectors of any kind, fuse holders, etc.) but surrounds the exposed metal keeping the highly corrosive seawater from touching it.

Best grease for this is a tub of silicone grease from the plumbing supply shop. For those who don't know what stuff is made of, it's also sold at significant markup with the label "dielectric grease" on it :)

You can use silicone winch grease in a pinch, although the friction additives in there are wasted on it, it will work.

#TheBoatyard

morgan
I finally put Meridian's name on the hull! Now she's properly able to introduce herself.

I'd been waiting until after I finished installing dinghy davits so that I'd know where to put the stern decals to work around them.

I spent the rest of the day provisioning, watering, doing laundry, tidying electronics, and cleaning (with a few breaks for video meetings and some debugging!)

We're finally all ready for summer sailing.

#sailing #theBoatyard

morgan
Done with the long Torqeedo tiller upgrade to Degree.

"Just" replacing the tiller involved borrowing tools to get to some very hard to reach screws, taking everything apart twice once I realized more lubrication was a good idea on the inside, and changing the mount on the back of the mothership to admit the longer tiller.

I can now sit at the front of my tender and steer from there. This allows me to keep it flat and efficient!

#theBoatyard

morgan
The Torqeedo motor throttle/tiller is a clever design. It is just a pole with no electrical or mechanical connection to the motor!

This allows the motor to be sealed against water ingress. It also electrically isolates the user from the motor and ensures that mechanical damage is limited to the tiller.

It appears to work with a small magnet and a sensor on the motor side.

Here's the back end of the tiller:

#theBoatyard

morgan
Picked up a mooring to do some work on my tender's electric motor.

I've been warned that it is easy to get stuck in a marina forever doing repairs. If the boat can safely sail, I try to follow advice and do anything on the water that can be done underway or at anchor/mooring ball. Cleaning, cooking, noncritical repairs, tender repairs...

#theBoatyard

morgan
Replacing diesel engine Mary Anne's belt and impeller on Meridian. Need to keep the cooling sea water flowing all summer.

I'm an experienced sailor and a total neophyte engine mechanic! This was purely theoretical until I crawled in there today.

I am again SO thankful for people who put videos on YouTube of this kind of stuff for the rest of us to learn from. If a time ever comes when know what I'm doing, I plan to do the same and pay it forward.

#theboatyard

R E K
Overtime, Pino has experienced many ways of being pulled out of the water.

#theBoatyard

jfroehlich
Arrrrg, bought the wrong anti-fouling paint two years ago and just noticed at #theBoatyard. No, I won’t paint the bottom white…

jfroehlich
Ce n'est pas une échelle… About half a dayof work left in #theBoatyard

jfroehlich
If the part of the hull your are working on mirrors #theBoatyard it's polished enough, right? I need to work on it just one more day until it's ready for the water. Oh, and it's raining right now.

jfroehlich
Turns out that the monourethane varnish from epifanes has to be thinned to a leTonk consistency even when brushing. Otherwise one risks bad runners and wrinkles. Found that out the hard way in #theBoatyard. But the fix looks ok, I guess. If you can’t see it now, the tourists on the beach won’t see it neither.

R E K
Whenever I fix a leak on Calcifer(our diesel engine), another one pops up, lol. Getting sick of playing engine leak whack-a-mole.

A water pump seal is not the worse kind of leak to have, but g'damn! Calcifer's so, so needy.

#theBoatyard

wrack
On Tuesday, this week, my wife had an appointment with a local cardiologist to review her case history and medications and to help us create a plan to manage her chronic and increasingly critical episodes of arrythmia and tachycardia. We now have to remain in Almerimar until June 11th while she is tested on a new medication and undergoes further examinations.

We're already using the extra time on the dock to upgrade Wrack's minimal systems and improve our living space below decks. This afternoon, we installed a new, heavy duty, electric bilge pump, adding it to two manual bilge pumps already installed. We also renewed parts of our ground tackle.

Next, some carpentry, above and below decks.

#theBoatyard
