Ivor<p>Each spring we await the arrival to the dale of small flocks of Lesser Turismo; a non-breeding summer visitor. </p><p>There are theories that they winter around the Mediterranean, and, like many of their species, can be seen eating chips and annoying the locals. </p><p>They make their way slowly along, sometimes disturbed and scattered into the side of the road by a fast moving resident Landus Roverus or it's larger, less common relative, the Range Roverus.<br><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Teesdale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Teesdale</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Tourists" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Tourists</span></a></p>
Ivor<p>It's a fine day so I'm back at the Binks, 10 min walk from the house for Craig and Tracey. Leaving the house I could hear a black grouse bubbling away and when I got out the gate it was displaying to a female on the roadside verge.</p><p>Took off, of course before I could get a photo. There are half a dozen hares chasing each other around. Still lots of Lapwing, curlew and snipe calling, flying, 'drumming'. No meadow pipits yet but maybe soon.<br><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Birds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Birds</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/wildlife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wildlife</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Teesdale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Teesdale</span></a></p>

Ivor<p>Went down to Bowlees for a walk along the Tees, starting at Low Force. Water level is quite high and there were walkers on the banks and canoeists negotiating the white water.<br><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Teesdale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Teesdale</span></a></p>
Ivor<p>First fine day for weeks, although still windy. First peewits I've seen this year, very skittish, landing briefly then heading over to other side of Harwood. </p><p>Eve also saw a single curlew. One male black grouse flew low along a wall nearby.</p><p>There's huge amount of molehills in the fields, to the annoyance of farmers, as soil can get into hay crop if the hills are still large at harvesting time. Does show that invertebrate numbers also huge as no pesticides used. </p><p><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Birds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Birds</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Teesdale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Teesdale</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/NPennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NPennines</span></a></p>

Ivor<p>A little montage of Monday morning in the N Pennines. It's stopped snowing but the wind has got up even more and fine snow is drifting in off the fields. Max depth is about 200mm, half the depth expected.</p><p>I think the roads are passable but not going out today. I believe the A66 is still closed from Brough over the highest stretch.</p><p>Dug a path to the byre and that's far enough. I don't think it will melt quickly as temps expected to drop a lot over next few days. <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Snow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Snow</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Teesdale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Teesdale</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Pennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pennines</span></a></p>

mootParadox<p>A boxing day <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/SheepOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>SheepOfMastodon</span></a> pic. This is not far from Middleton in Teesdale in the North Pennines. Calm day, and too hot for my coat! 😎 Supposedly this is the warmest Christmas since 2016. <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Teesdale" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Teesdale</span></a> <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Pennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Pennines</span></a></p>
Ivor<p>It's cold, windy and hail is rattling down. There were about a dozen goldfinch in the rowan tree until I sneezed. Half a dozen black grouse flew over from Unthank direction but didn't stop. Out the back of the house there's a hare backed up against a big clump of rough grasses keeping out of the wind.<br><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Teesdale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Teesdale</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/SemiAlpine" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SemiAlpine</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/CountryLife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CountryLife</span></a></p>

happyhiker<p>Cauldron Snout &amp; Cronkley Scar at the heart of the <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/NorthPennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NorthPennines</span></a> AONB, is a “must do” Teesdale walk. It is an impressive waterfall beneath Cow Green Reservoir, perhaps more impressive than better known High Force. Ivor<p>The view across Harwood is a bit miserable today. There are six male black grouse in the field across the road, two of which have come to the roadside verge to inspect the rowan tree. </p><p>Craning their necks up, like me, they can see that it's been a poor year for berries. A few minutes later they flew back to the field to report this sad fact to the others.<br><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Birds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Birds</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Teesdale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Teesdale</span></a></p>
Ivor<p>The light is going and there have been a couple of power cuts today. Only off for a few minutes but other places for longer I'm told. Very strong winds all day haven't shifted the mist, or is it low cloud? <br><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/NPennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NPennines</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Teesdale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Teesdale</span></a></p>
happyhiker<p>This is an easy walk from the pretty village of Romaldkirk in <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Teesdale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Teesdale</span></a> to Cotherstone. There are some lovely views along the way, not least of Egglestone Hall, where you can visit the café and gardens if you wish. Details at tinyurl.com/mszeb8bu</p>

happyhiker<p>This walk is set in little known Baldersdale, an offshoot of the main <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Teesdale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Teesdale</span></a> valley in <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/CountyDurham" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CountyDurham</span></a>. The route takes you to Goldsborough, one of several ‘Table Mountains’ in the area with great long distance views. Route details at tinyurl.com/2rfmsah4</p>
Ivor<p>This is the last gap in this field, it's where the field narrows as it comes close to a high bank above the Tees, downstream from Low Force. I've worked my way slowly along the field. </p><p>It's far from glamorous work and it's never going to look perfect as the whole wall is not in a good condition. It keeps the sheep from going off into the wood, so it gets the job done. <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Farming" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Farming</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Teesdale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Teesdale</span></a></p>
happyhiker<p>I really enjoyed this walk with long distance views from the top of Harter fell in <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/CountyDurham" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>CountyDurham</span></a>. Navigation is straightforward, as the route partly follows the Pennine Way, with a slight challenge over Access Land to visit the summit. Ivor<p>Another bit of overnight damage to a wall.
