Artist Cedric Morris and his partner Arthur Lett-Haines opened the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing at Dedham in 1937. Within a year they had 60 students. Lucian Freud was one of his most noted students.

About Freud, Morris would later write:

When I was a grad student at the University of Iowa's journalism school, Prof Kenneth Starck was my mentor & adviser. Our friendship continued long after my graduation & his retirement. This wonderful man, great teacher, & world traveler passed on earlier this month. #RIP
