josh susser
OK, so this RFKjr attack on autistic people is terrible and demands a response. But the response can't be only to go on the defensive, because then all we can do is try to lose ground more slowly. We need to go on offense and fight for expansion of autistic rights and protections. This is the moment for it because people are paying attention, and we might be able to turn that into support for positive change. Look at all the support there is for trans rights and protections now, largely in response to government actions against trans folk. We could do that, too.

I can think of a thing or two to push for: 1) Ban ABA. 2) Ban electric shock torture at Judge Rotenberg Center.

What else would be a good goal to fight for to expand autistic rights and protections? What about expanding support for us, or having any support at all for autistic adults? What changes do we want in schools? What about having texting available as an alternative for all public phone-based systems? I don't know what makes sense, but I want to hear if you have an idea.

But banning ABA would be amazing and if we got nothing else out of this moment that would be enough for me. Who would be a good leader for this effort? Do we need an autistic celebrity spokesperson? And does anyone have a "talk to your electeds about banning ABA starter kit?"
#ActuallyAutistic #AutisticRights #BanABA #StopTheShock

josh susser
This is a good video from Forrest Valkai knocking down a "let's protect conversion therapy" bill in Oklahoma, and criticizing conversion therapy in general.

But I have to say, it always bothers me that we see so many straight allies denouncing queer conversion therapy (which is a good thing), but I can't remember ever seeing even a single allistic person denounce ABA that way. Queer conversion therapy and ABA are the same thing, created by the same person, just done on different groups. It sucks that somehow being queer is worthy of people standing up for you, but being autistic is not. So we have to do it all ourselves without any help from allistics.

Every time I see someone stand up against conversion therapy, I want to reply NOW DO ABA! What will it take for people to care about us the way they care about everyone else?
#ActuallyAutistic #ABA #ConversionTherapy #StopTheShock

https://youtu.be/qxFhiJn9wRU

Alex Karp (he/him) :clippy:
If you’ve made it this far, you have my deep appreciation. But if you’ve made it this far, you’re probably wondering what you can do to help. So here is a by no means exhaustive list of things to do:

1. Educate yourself. Follow #ActuallyAutistic content creators. Read NeuroClastic. Talk to autistic people.

2. Donate to groups that are run by #ActuallyAutistic people.

3. Support and amplify autistic voices on Twitter and anywhere else.

4. Educate others. Make sure they aren’t donating to hate groups. Make sure that they understand why it’s important to listen to autistic voices.

5. Be an ally. Stand up against ABA and other worthy causes like #StopTheShock. Educate people when you see them using a puzzle piece for autism. Tell NPR that Autism Speaks is a hate group and it shouldn’t let them sponsor radio stations.

6. And lastly, give an autistic person a hug. But ask first. /END

https://neuroclastic.com
