Strider Uwe 🇺🇦🇨🇦🇲🇽<p>Today’s <a href="https://norcal.social/tags/SolarCooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SolarCooking</span></a> wasn’t anything new with the solar part, just bread which is starting to become routine, but I tweaked the recipe… added some cheese garlic powder and ground ancho. It was hard to not drool while it was baking 🤤</p>
Strider Uwe 🇺🇦🇨🇦🇲🇽<p>Today’s experiment in <a href="https://norcal.social/tags/SolarCooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SolarCooking</span></a>: Linzer torte — actually, poundcake. Making it as a poundcake is about 90% of the flavor for 20% or less of the work, and I’m lazy 😎 Recipe is pretty much out of Joy of Cooking, with a couple of tweaks: I put in about 2/3 the sugar or less, and I add a bit of cayenne pepper.</p><p>Wet ingredients:<br>2.25 sticks of unsalted butter aka 9 oz<br>3 eggs<br>0.75 to 1.5 cups sugar, I use about 1<br>1 tsp vanilla<br>mix them all together thoroughly in a stand mixer</p><p>1/2</p>
Strider Uwe 🇺🇦🇨🇦🇲🇽<p>Bread porn. Sorry. (Not really 😝) Just out of the sun oven after 2 hours of <a href="https://norcal.social/tags/SolarCooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SolarCooking</span></a>. Needs to cool a bit, but the cheese bread recipe is looking pretty good.</p>
Strider Uwe 🇺🇦🇨🇦🇲🇽<p><a href="https://norcal.social/tags/solarcooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>solarcooking</span></a> results. Just over 2 hours of baking in bright sun. At this stage, freshly out, the bread is still pretty fragile. It takes some time for it to cool and dry a bit more, and that makes it a bit more crusty.</p>
Strider Uwe 🇺🇦🇨🇦🇲🇽<p>Dang. It was time for another round of <a href="https://norcal.social/tags/solarcooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>solarcooking</span></a> sun bread, so I set to it; only the measuring cup was dirty. So I winged it, in an allegedly-capable-of-measuring cup, only it’s at least 35 years old, so all the markings have worn off… well, usually I measure, and then I have to tweak with a tablespoon or two of either water or flour. Not this time… it was essentially perfect without tweaks. Maybe I should stop measuring! 👀😆</p>
Strider Uwe 🇺🇦🇨🇦🇲🇽<p><a href="https://norcal.social/tags/solarcooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>solarcooking</span></a> sun bread recipe<br>4 cups flour, about 2 each of all-purpose white and whole wheat but do as you like<br>1 tablespoon yeast<br>1.5 cups lukewarm water<br>1 tablespoon oil<br>1 tablespoon sugar or honey<br>1 teaspoon salt or to taste<br>optional 1 cup grated cheese</p><p>Mix it all together, beat it up as one does, then bake. In a regular oven it would be 1 loaf, bake for 1 hour at 350 F. In my sun oven it’s 3 small loaves, and usually it takes 2 hours or just a bit more.</p>
Strider Uwe 🇺🇦🇨🇦🇲🇽<p><a href="https://norcal.social/tags/solarcooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>solarcooking</span></a> — again, brownies. I’m having to adjust the process as the season progresses; the sun is too high, and there is not enough light on my balcony. So… out onto the sidewalk! Just gotta babysit it then, lest stray dogs cats or people mess with it.</p><p>The oven is a Gosun Fusion, which I’m pretty pleased with. It easily gets hot enough to bake in, sun bread is routine by now. Maybe I’ll try Linzertorte next.</p>
Strider Uwe 🇺🇦🇨🇦🇲🇽<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://digitalcourage.social/@Muzyrja" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>Muzyrja</span></a></span> (but I use less sugar, about 2/3 of this amount). The recipe calls for elaborately melting the butter, mixing this then that etc, but honestly I just dump it all in a bowl and let the mixer beat it into submission. Baking time… well, in a solar oven you’ll need to experiment a bit, but I baked mine for about 1.5 hours.</p><p><a href="https://norcal.social/tags/solarcooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>solarcooking</span></a></p>

Muzyrja<p>Today was another sunny day, perfect for <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/cooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>cooking</span></a> in the <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/solarOven" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>solarOven</span></a>. I didn't do anything spectacular, just cooked rice. But it worked perfectly again, at least as well as in the rice cooker. The photos are attached.</p><p>Dear <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fediverse</span></a>, if you have more experience with solar oven cooking, please share more recipes with me 🙏</p><p><a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/cooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>cooking</span></a> <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/solarCooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>solarCooking</span></a> <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/offgridpower" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>offgridpower</span></a> <a href="https://digitalcourage.social/tags/solarpunk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>solarpunk</span></a></p>
Strider Uwe 🇺🇦🇨🇦🇲🇽<p>Next experiment in <a href="https://norcal.social/tags/solarcooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>solarcooking</span></a> is brownies. 2/3 scale recipe, because I wasn’t sure if it would all fit into the oven, and it baked for about 1.5 hours instead of 30 minutes; other than that, no changes to the recipe. They have to cool a bit, but they look and smell pretty good 😋</p>

Project Insanity<p>Do you know <a href="https://social.project-insanity.org/tags/solarCooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>solarCooking</span></a> ? Like with <a href="https://social.project-insanity.org/tags/gosun" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gosun</span></a>? It take sometimes an hour until the food is hot and cooked. I want it finished until I am back without waiting so I set it to sun where it would be shining 3..4 hours later. When I came back it was hot and finished like set with solar timer. 😋 🌞</p>
Strider Uwe 🇺🇦🇨🇦🇲🇽<p>Trying out the non-solar capabilities of my solar oven… gotta practice. Working on the resilient self-reliant life. If it works, I can bake bread in the wilderness, at night.</p><p><a href="https://norcal.social/tags/SolarCooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SolarCooking</span></a> <a href="https://norcal.social/tags/GoSun" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GoSun</span></a> <a href="https://norcal.social/tags/Bluetti" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Bluetti</span></a> Not affiliated with any of these companies, just a customer</p>

ordinoides<p>Today I used my solar oven(s) for the first time this year, beating my previous record by about 2 weeks! Air temp outside ranged from 25F to 42F (-3C-5C). Inside the oven the temp reached 180F (82C)<br>My box oven was joined by a folding panel cooker, design is called the Copenhagen Cooker, it's very effective and easy to make, but more vulnerable to wind. <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/Solar" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Solar</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/SolarCooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SolarCooking</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/LowTech" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LowTech</span></a> <a href="https://kolektiva.social/tags/SolarOven" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SolarOven</span></a></p>
Strider Uwe 🇺🇦🇨🇦🇲🇽<p><a href="https://norcal.social/tags/SolarCooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SolarCooking</span></a> bread 2. This just came out, haven’t tried it yet, but it looks sounds and smells perfect. Dang! ☀️🍞😎</p>
Strider Uwe 🇺🇦🇨🇦🇲🇽<p>Next <a href="https://norcal.social/tags/SolarCooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SolarCooking</span></a> experiment: bread — small loaves or rolls, you pick what to call them. They came out soft, but I wouldn’t blink at getting something like this as an appetizer at a fancy restaurant. I do have to grease the pans though, and next time bake another 20-30 minutes; I ran out of sun today. Learning!</p>
Strider Uwe 🇺🇦🇨🇦🇲🇽<p>Second <a href="https://norcal.social/tags/SolarCooking" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SolarCooking</span></a> experiment. Wow! Came out just about perfect — a little bit dry. Either add a tiny bit more water, or cook 5-10 minutes less; this was an hour.</p>
