#reddit is good for two reasons as far as I'm concerned as someone not always online:

1. Talking about #tourettes as it's one of the few active, large communities who actually have TS, and don't just think they have TS cuz they saw a few videos. People with TS also tend to be terminally online as it's embarrassing to many.

2. Getting banned for 30 days cuz I said something that made sense, but offended someone who knew I used enough keywords to find an automod.

#youtube has become my #realitytv since it's mainly where I go to feel less stupid when I need a confidence boost, or see a bunch of stories that are absolutely insane/horrifying since #truth is stranger than #fiction.

I'll also find #science and #history content, but how can you NOT click a #video titled "The ALIEN INFLUENCERS of Instagram" or "The SHOCKINGLY Real Community of Nazi Furries,".

I bet they have an inside joke about being "Nazi Füries,".

I found this article in Ars Technica interesting. I've noticed the same dynamics here on fedi.

It's still better here because these free platforms aren't _trying_ to make you upset, but it's still something I wish people were more circumspect about when they praise the #fediverse.

Open to friendly discussion and disagreement ;D

Ars Technica · Study: Social media probably can’t be fixedBy Jennifer Ouellette

Canada is experiencing its second-worst wildfire season on record (more than 7.3 million hectares have burned so far in 2025) and it's been especially bad in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Paris Marx writes about how social media, particularly Facebook, has led to the spread of misinformation. False claims include that resources are being taken from one fire to prioritize another, and even that the states of emergency declared are part of a government campaign to take people's rights. "We can become accustomed to the harms of these platforms and the information environment they create, but the social damage really comes to the fore in a moment of crisis when you can see just how bad they are informing people," Marx says.

Disconnect · Wading through the social media hazeBy Paris Marx

Supreme Court allows Mississippi social media law to go into effect.

The Supreme Court on Thursday refused to intervene on a lower court decision that affirmed a Mississippi law requiring ALL users to verify their ages before using social media sites such as Facebook, Instagram, Nextdoor, Snapchat, etc.

Justice Brett Kavanaughwrote: "In short, under this Court's case law as it currently stands, the Mississippi law is likely unconstitutional." He still ruled to allow it to begin. #USPol #SocialMedia #MastoAdmin
