#FoodAid groups bought from #LocalFarmers with #USDA grants. Abrupt cuts leave both struggling.

By Meg Oliver, June 30, 2025

"Four days a week, Maile Auterson and one of her employees drive hundreds of miles across Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas to deliver fresh produce to #FoodDeserts.

"Auterson's nonprofit, Springfield #CommunityGardens, helps #UnderservedSchools, #FoodPantries and senior centers. One center in Ava, #Missouri, is the only place for many where they can get a hot meal.

"Springfield Community Gardens is one of many organizations that relied on grants from the United States Department of Agriculture to distribute produce to schools and low-income communities through two pandemic-era federal programs. They provided about $1 billion in funding to schools and food banks to buy food directly from local farms, ranchers and producers.

"But in March, the USDA abruptly canceled the programs, calling the decision a 'return to long-term, fiscally responsible initiatives.'

"Now, Auterson says, 'some of the most vulnerable people' are without adequate access to food, including children and #SeniorCitizens."

>>The guardianships were a closely guarded secret, the person said. The individual said that as many as 15 people under guardianship were being hidden at the Laureate Psychiatric Clinic and Hospital, attached to the St. Francis campus in South Tulsa.

To repeat, St. Francis refused all comment for this story.<<

Oklahoma Watch · Eldercare Nightmare: A Tragic Family Story Raises the Specter of Widespread Guardianship FraudBy JC Hallman

"From my 81-year-old mother—a former Republican whose contempt for Trump grows each day, to a U.S. Vietnam veteran manning the bullhorn, to my former city councilor in his mid-70s who was determined to attend despite recovering from recent major surgery, the seniors were out in force on Saturday."

If you're over 55 & haven't thought about it & don't want to be a complete burden upon your children &/or relatives down the road, you should do some research on long term care policies & buy the best one that you can afford now, before you actually need one.

I bought a long term care policy over 20 years ago.

Paid for it in full in order to avoid the payments & the risk of cancellation in case any payments were missed. It didn't cost that much . . . around $13K as I recall which I'm guessing would be considered extremely cheap now.

I don't know how it compares with other policies because I never did a comparison with other policies. However, I've read it &, while there are a lot of exclusions, at least I've got one. 🤷‍♂️

From the article: "Rideshare services are convenient, but accessing them can prove a challenge to less tech-savvy potential passengers, particularly older adults. But companies are introducing changes that make their services easier for these groups to access. Lyft Silver is a new account type that, like Women+ Connect (aimed at women and nonbinary passengers), makes it simpler and safer to hail a ride and get support when needed.

"Lyft Silver has several features to make rideshare services more accessible to older adults. With a Lyft Silver account, users will see a redesigned version of the app with larger fonts and simpler navigation. The app will prioritize matching Lyft Silver users with vehicles that are easy to get into and out of, and allow them to share real-time ride details with trusted contacts.

"Lyft will also offer live phone support between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. ET to assist Lyft Silver riders in the U.S."

Ageism, which is how we think (stereotypes), feel (prejudices), and act (discrimination) towards others or ourselves based on age, is harmful for our health and well-being. The UN Global report on ageism shows that ageism has serious consequences for our physical / mental health, impacts negatively on our social well-being, and takes a heavy economic toll on individuals and society. To stop the damage, urgent action is needed to address ageism around the world.

Join this launch webinar for the new WHO Ageism Scale: a set of extensively tested metrics designed to monitor ageism levels worldwide, illuminate its drivers and consequences, and evaluate the impact of interventions aimed at reducing ageism.

This first-of-its-kind tool, developed for the WHO Global Campaign to Combat Ageism, marks a significant step forward in our global effort to take action to combat ageism and create #AWorld4AllAges.

All #SeniorCitizens like me (I'm 75 this year) are not addled or infirm but thanks for offering your help to help those who may be.

I know how to access the #SSA website & receive notices from them periodically, including the recent notice of the 40% increase in my #SocialSecurityBenefits plus a nice lump sum payment for past due benefits that I just received due to the passage of the Social Security Fairness Act (#SSFA).

From the article: "With people aged 75 and older projected to be the fastest growing segment of the U.S. workforce, HR leaders face an urgent challenge: adapting workplaces to accommodate older employees working past the traditional retirement age.

“As our workforce ages, employers must shift their mindset to view accommodations for older workers not as an added burden but as an opportunity to enhance productivity, retain talent and foster an inclusive workplace,” said Brandy Burch, CEO at Benefitbay, a benefits solutions provider.

"The demographic shift is already well underway. The average age of workers in the U.S. is 42, with some industries skewing even older. Yet, many companies fall behind when it comes to accommodating older employees."
