Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>"Valley of the Yosemite," Albert Bierstadt, 1864.</p><p>Prussian-born Bierstadt (1830-1902) became one of America's most acclaimed artists for his visual chronicles of the American West, in a time before it was opened up by railways.</p><p>He studied painting in the Dusseldorf school, then joined the Hudson River School before taking his first journey west in 1859. From then on, he became famous for his paintings of the untouched frontiers to the west, most of which were fairly romanticized, but at the same time, he was trying to preserve an idea of what the land was like before the influx of travelers, as railroads were built.</p><p>He had a lot of commercial success, but after the Civil War ended, his work began to be viewed as overly theatrical, and by the 1890s he had fallen out of favor; a fire in his studio destroyed a number of his paintings as well. When he passed away he was nearly forgotten.</p><p>In the 1960s, though, he was rediscovered, &amp; there's still some controversy...some still regard his work as "soulless" and overly theatrical and romantic, while others view his work as supporting the early conservation movement and the creation of the national park system. I kinda like the romanticism myself.</p><p>From the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.</p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Art</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/AlbertBierstadt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>AlbertBierstadt</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/HudsonRIverSchool" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>HudsonRIverSchool</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Yosemite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Yosemite</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Luminism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Luminism</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Landscape" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Landscape</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/ROmanticism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ROmanticism</span></a></p>

Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>"Whistlejacket," George Stubbs, 1762.</p><p>Why not a portrait of a horse? Whistlejacket (foaled in 1749) was a champion thoroughbred racehorse who belonged first to Sir William Middleton of Northumberland, later sold to the Marquess of Rockingham, at the time a future Prime Minister of England, and who commissioned this painting. Whistlejacket was the most famous racehorse of his era, and is referred to by name in many contemporary writings, including Oliver Goldsmith's play "She Stoops to Conquer."</p><p>Stubbs (1724-1806) was an early Romantic-era painter who was most famous for his equestrian paintings, a subgenre of art that was almost solely practiced in Great Britain. Wealthy owners of successful racehorses often wanted portraits of their horses, and Stubbs was the top practitioner. Many of his paintings were normal portraits of a horse posing with a jockey.</p><p>This, however, is regarded as Stubb's masterwork. It's a large canvas, with the horse in a dramatic pose, with no background at all (leaving some to believe it unfinished), forming what has been called a "Romantic image of triumph and freedom." There are similar equine paintings done to emphasize the rider, but here we see only the horse itself. </p><p>From the National Gallery, London.</p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Art</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/GeorgeStubbs" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>GeorgeStubbs</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/EquinePainting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>EquinePainting</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/PortraitMonday" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PortraitMonday</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Romanticism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Romanticism</span></a></p>

Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>Musical Interlude: In keeping with tonight's Romanticism with Art, here's some Romanticism with music. Pablo de Sarasate was a violinist who took up composing mainly as a way of creating music to show off what he could do with the violin...and let's be honest, he succeeded. And created some good music in the bargain.</p><p>"Caprice Basque," composed by Pablo de Sarasate, performed by Antal Zalai.</p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iy31IX9sIUU" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">youtube.com/watch?v=iy31IX9sIU</span><span class="invisible">U</span></a></p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/MusicalInterlude" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MusicalInterlude</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/ClassicalMusic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ClassicalMusic</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/PabloDeSarasate" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>PabloDeSarasate</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Violin" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Violin</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Romanticism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Romanticism</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/MusicalRomanticism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>MusicalRomanticism</span></a></p>
Hotspur🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦<p>"The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun," William Blake, c. 1805.</p><p>Blake (1757-1827) was one of the great visionary artists of all time. Both his paintings and poetry were hugely influential on the Romantic movement. He was a friend of Thomas Paine, although he had his disagreements with both the American and French revolutions, and was also involved in mysticism. He had his own idiosyncratic beliefs, and even today biographers have a hard time classifying his spirituality; it was definitely Christian but also rejected the Church of England and any other recognized denomination.</p><p>This is one of a series of illustrations he did as part of a commission to illustrate the Bible. Here, he depicts Revelations 12, which mentions a "great red dragon."</p><p>Blake is a fascinating and diverse character I need to learn much more about. He had a fervent religiosity about him, but was also a believer in free love and rejected many of Christianity's ideas of virtue and chastity. His poetry involved various revisions of the traditional creation story. He was also a huge influence on the Beat Generation and some feel his idea prefigure Karl Jung's ideas of the psyche. In other words, there's a lot going on there.</p><p>From the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.</p><p><a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Art" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Art</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/VisionaryArt" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VisionaryArt</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/Romanticism" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Romanticism</span></a> <a href="https://social.vivaldi.net/tags/WilliamBlake" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>WilliamBlake</span></a></p>
