Still a performance, just with better lighting & brooding soundtracks. The #Romantic didn't dismantle the theater. He changed the scenery & declared himself "real." He wanted to feel, yes, but mostly to be seen feeling. The tragic irony is that authenticity became just another script, rehearsed before the imagined gaze of others.

So history doesn't oscillate between masks & authenticity. It oscillates between conscious performance & deluded performance.
