You know that science fiction trope about dangerous forbidden zones that warp reality? I think they're symbolic. There's a reason why themes become tropes. Must be something on our minds...

On August 15, 1980, Stalker debuted in Finland. Here’s an original portrait of Alexander Kaidanovsky!

Yes Picnic is really good.
Stalker movie and Picnic book are about as unrelated as a movie that claims connection to a book can be.
The book is gritty, ugly and about humans and greed.
The movie - could almost be a LSD weekend on an abandoned farm. Maybe the psychonauts have read Picnic recently and so Picnic motifs are hallucinated?
New instance, new #introduction part 2 (reposted from my previous instance):

Ok, I fibbed. One last go-to comfort re-read: the #Discworld series, also by Terry Pratchett (Is listing an entire series cheating? I can't possibly pick one. Sorry not sorry.)
I haven't Read #RoadsidePicnic in about 15 years, and on someone's mention of it, it seems like a good thing to buy with one of my remaining Audible credits. I look at it. It's narrated by Robert Forster. Talk about an easy sell.
