#Austria laid the first tracks produced with green hydrogen instead of fossil fuels, making them the first net zero CO₂ emission tracks in the world. The new tracks were used at the western exit from #Linz main station. #ÖBB CEO, Andreas Matthä, stated, the ÖBB wants to produce all its steel with net zero CO₂ emissions by 2050.

The French brewery La Débauche brewed a beer called "Big Boy", a Chili Imperial Stout (which is really good, btw). It even features a prominent steam locomotive on its label, which, however, doesn't look much like the historical #UnionPacific #BigBoy.

The #EuropeanUnion's draft budget, unveiled last week, includes "unprecedented financial commitment to #rail #infrastructure and #sustainable #transport initiatives." The funds for the #HorizonEurope and #CEF are doubled to € 175 billion and € 50 billion respectively, boosting infrastructure projects and transport related research across the continent.

During a test run in June, an #ICE train has reached a top speed of 405 km/h on the Erfurt–Leipzig/Halle high-speed railway. It provided "valuable data for maintaining and upgrading high-speed lines, as well as advancing high-speed train technology". Typically ICE services operate at a maximum speed of 300 km/h.

A heritage railway is a railway operated as living history to re-create or preserve railway scenes of the past. Heritage railways are often old railway lines preserved in a state depicting a period (or periods) in the history of rail transport.
While some heritage railways are profitable tourist attractions, many are not-for-profit entities.
The #TbilisiMetro opened on 11 January 1966, making it the fourth metro system in the former #SovietUnion. It consists two lines, serving 23 stations. Most of its stations are deeply built and vividly decorated.

#Stadler unveiled #RSZero in the #CzechRepublic, a fully decarbonised #locomotive. It offers a green alternative to the country's ageing diesel vehicles. Only 35% of Czechia's rail network is electrified. It is the second country, after #Germany, to introduce the RS Zero. It has a range of up to 800km using its hydrogen propulsion system.

In the Lac-Mégantic #rail #disaster on July 6, 2013, an unattended 73-car #MMA freight train carrying crude oil rolled down a 1.2% grade and derailed in the Canadian town Lac-Mégantic. Multiple tank cars exploded, killing 47 people and destroying roughly half of all buildings in the town centre. It is the deadliest #freight #train #accident in #Canada's history.

According to #DiscoveryUK, the longest and heaviest #train ever rolling on our planet was a 682-car train powered by eight locomotives in #Australia. Its total length was 7,353 meters and the weight accumulated to 99,732.1 tons. The train transported iron ore for mining company #BHPBilliton (now #BHP).

#PuffingBilly, an historic steam train still running regularly in the mountain district, was built to serve at the turn of the century. The #railway is the sole survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900's.
