The POV characters make efforts to resolve issues peacefully, usually with words (albeit, sometimes angry ones). Violence does happen, especially since the stories are not about everyday run-of-the-mill people. When the story involves gangsters and the mob, violence goes without saying. Ditto for a story about a prizefighter. (Same MC.) That said, I provide only the details necessary for the fight, but magnify the grit and stupidity and limit or imply the gore. What the characters think about when being violent or enduring violence is what matters. I try not to glorify combatants. Most decisions they're forced to make grind away at their souls. PTSD is a thing.</p><p>On a scale of 1 to 10, the stories are in the 3 to 6 range.</p><p>I considered adding an excerpt, then thought maybe I would add the excerpt as a threaded reply, but decided not to. Violence might be necessary to the selected story, to demonstrate how senseless, useless, or mad it actually can be—but minus the context of the story and the MC's internal dialogue about what she's seeing—having been taken into a war zone by her teacher, the excerpt is far too sad and needless, which is her teacher's point.</p><p>I did get a chance to neaten up the prose, though!</p><p>[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sf</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sff</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sciencefiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sciencefiction</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSstory</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSReluctanceStory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSReluctanceStory</span></a></p>

What kind?</p></blockquote><p>This calls for a fun excerpt of something not current, redacted for <em>reasons.</em> The main character needs a ship, any ship, to save the city. What she gets is a museum piece. </p><blockquote><p>… the frigate [airship] came into view.</p><p>The huge air bag [] had the streamlined shape of a dolphin, accentuated by the blue-grey sky illusion laid upon it. I spotted a [large sailor] climbing the net rigging toward the airbag, then realized the fellow wasn't that big and neither in scale was the frigate. I soon deciphered the oddities of the stretched fabric-sided hull, which resembled a boat hull, held taut by a frame, [shell made-solid solely] by paint and shellac [for weight considerations]. Likely not knife-safe. Canoes were constructed this way so a single [person] could carry them on their back. I spotted [human]-sized chips and dents that incidentally had net stretched between copper strips as a strengthener. The side of the vessel I viewed looked splintered; paint in places hid a charcoaled texture where burns were patched not repaired. Were the frigate a canoe, it would leak. The inverted hammerhead keel looked too lacy to standup to a gale, let alone a lake, but rigged with sailcloth it functioned to let the airship sail directionally through the air. The mechanical engineering aspects went beyond me. [I] sensed magic, probably runes along the upward bend toward the back. [The runes were] not a particularly stealthy attribute [if I could sense them], but I could understand how those worked well enough.</p><p>The chief [petty officer] corrected my observations. "That front 'crossbow' is a Ballista Minotaur-3, hot stuff last century. The rear casement got blown off in the <em>Stoop's</em> final engagement and never replaced. The three on the side are Harpy-class trebuchets. Like those aft two, all three on the port side are undergoing recommissioning."</p><p>"Which means they don't work."</p><p>"Should be scrapped. Yes, but we don't have the liberty to do that. I only have sailor-power to repair what I have parts for. Budgets."</p><p>"It looks impressive from a distance."</p><p>"Heh, heh," he said, scratching the back of his [head]. This allows them to grow everywhere, and by law they must be allowed to grow in greenbelts, parks, and along roads.</p><p>I named one <em>Floof</em> as I got the idea from Spooky Panda's account name. It grows like daisy plant, which the flowers and vegetation resembles, is weedy, is resistant to drought, has bitter edible leaves most herbivores avoid, and after blooming, has enormous cotton candy-like heads that are directly edible, but if snapped off the plant and allowed to dry for a day (and the weather is almost always terribly hot), it breaks into powder that can be baked into bread. It's conveniently self-rising as the nectar in the flowers breed yeast. The <em>Decath Crown</em>, as it is referred to, is one of a number of antagonistic organizations the book's MC ends up dealing with, but it is also the most insidious. I don't expect anyone to read about this out-of-context, but I will admit that I invented the religion for a fascist state instead of using a real one to diffuse my fear of needlessly picking on one religion and likely upsetting part of my potential audience. After the fact, it feels a bit like I am picking on all religions, only kind of passive-aggressively. I'm okay with that. Everybody needs their nose tweaked now and again. What follows is a slightly [annotated] excerpt from the glossary in the book.</p><blockquote><p><strong>Decath</strong> - A religious organization which was a successor to the various Christian nationalist faiths that created NADS [North American Decath States] from its predecessor state [the United States], consolidated into a theocratic state-supported ministry. The religion is now world-wide, except where banned in five catholic countries. Adherents say it is not a successor to Catholicism, but a rejection of it. It comes from <em>Dissenting Catholicism</em>, and teaches that the <em>liberal interpretations</em> promulgated by the various orthodox and protestant churches regarding Christ's word was unfounded, and furthermore <em>misrepresented</em> God's will based on improper readings of both the new and old testaments. Their catholicism is a new orthodoxy that properly interprets an apostolic church structure while supporting a protestant ideal of a priesthood of believers that is guided by ministers. It is accurately spelled <em>De</em>-cath not <em>Dis</em>-cath. This because the members of the initial <em>Synod of Alabama</em>—which drew together the leaders or designates of various nationalistic churches, their largest corporate sponsors, and hundreds of US congressmen and sixty-nine senators—thought having the word sound like <em>decaf</em> would <em>sell</em> better amongst the disparate flocks they shepherded. </p></blockquote><p>[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a> and <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/CommentingIsCool" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CommentingIsCool</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sf</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sff</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sciencefiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sciencefiction</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSstory</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSMarsNeededWomen" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSMarsNeededWomen</span></a></p>

My knowledge of our current reality, and how people operate it is too incomplete to write mainstream. I might, otherwise. What you get from me is a (hopefully literate) mixture of adventure, wonder, and slice of life. I am increasingly good at the latter. You can judge for yourself with the excerpt in this reply to Writers Coffee Club today: <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/@sfwrtr/114939073843956961" translate="no" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">eldritch.cafe/@sfwrtr/11493907</span><span class="invisible">3843956961</span></a></p><p><strong>Maker</strong></p><p>My photographic style is not the compromise that Scribes presented above. My primary style is contrasts, especially color contrasts. This may be due to two things. The first was taking a class in drawing (charcoal and pen &amp; ink) and in color (pastel and colored pencil). What I learned was how to portray volume in 2D images, and that's through contrast. The second was that I really got into the Carlos Castaneda books. There I encountered the concept of seeing shadows instead of the object, and learned to do that. (I also learned to lucid dream, but that's another topic.) It's called Negative Space in art speak. It thrills me when I capture an image that pops brightly out of the background because the background is dark or a contrasting color. The following copyrighted image is from the Glass Koi series (under another pseudonym). The fish colors render in sRGB as bright red, but when properly printer profiled they render as a burnished bronzy orange. It nevertheless demonstrates color contrast.</p><p>=-=-=-=-=-=<br>† This is a Twilight Zone reference.</p><p>[Author and artist retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a> and <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/CommentingIsCool" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>CommentingIsCool</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/photographer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>photographer</span></a> chef cooking<br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a></p>

In this excerpt, Streak Carryingaton is a day angel and for verisimilitude, let's call him a senior in high school. Very human, but with wings that allow him to do <em>things,</em> which you can intuit as "magic" for the sake of the passage. To understand the proprioception in the last paragraphs, there's some setup necessary. Think of the "She," the "Her," and the "Director" mentioned as a "Queen," who not only teaches "magic," but whose libido has focused on Streak. CW: Light innuendo ahead.</p><blockquote><p>I hefted the leather harness lined with angelic down—by the blue and red color likely Rainy Day's own—on the underside. So soft!</p><p><em>Like my skull.</em> I'd been stupid, but events followed events. Thorn had initiated. I'd had to win the game. </p><p>"Flap it all," I said, but had to admit I was having fun, and this tack and harness! Thread-like copper and silver wires glittered: waveguides likely molecularly grown into the structure. "I really want this rig. It's hers?"</p><p>"You forget everything belongs to her? You're its new steward."</p><p>"Wow. I must be doing something right."</p><p>I noticed a few knowing smirks in the gathering crowd of day and night angel women. </p><p><em>Maybe I am doing something right, and of that I am proud.</em> I quickly laid out the tack, gave it the proper preflight, inspected the double-length van, then the load. He'd not balanced some iron grill ovens properly. Brother Cloud probably'd not done commercial cargo work. I knew my weight capacities and my wing tension transmission vectors, so I adjusted the lading for that. I valued the rare occasions I got to pull. Ours was a warehousing facility, but our contracts included local delivery and short hops into the mountains away from rail lines and saint ways. I gave the thumbs up. I ignored some clapping from the women, and the few hoots and whistles of approval that often hid a more passionate agenda.</p><p>Cloud Dancer nudged me. "Don't worry. The Director told them they can only shop, not buy." He slapped my rear, chuckling; my face heated as he helped me with the harness. I really wasn't that nice looking, not like he was, but the women approved, apparently. I had a lot to learn that Mens' Studies class didn't address.</p><p>The instant I buckled it all together and I unfurled my wings, an expansive feeling overcame me, like I'd grown in height and wingspan. The women cleared to the radius the angelic sensed intuitively. Were I one of Thorns' sprites, my tentative flaps would flush liquid light to splash the pavement beside me, whilst washing back and cresting over the van, causing it to glow brightly. It was exactly the feeling of taking a stick and sensing as you touched something with the end as if it were your finger. The van became part of my body. In my mind, I'd grown from a wren to a hawk. It was equal parts imagination and feedback through the tack and my wings. I could now reach out with my longest primary and tap the planter across the courtyard that I'd nearly dashed into earlier. I did.</p><p>The shrubs there rustled and leaves spiraled up on an eddy.</p></blockquote><p>[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/mystery" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>mystery</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/thriller" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>thriller</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/romance" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>romance</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sf" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sf</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sff" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sff</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/sciencefiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>sciencefiction</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSstory</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSReluctanceStory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSReluctanceStory</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/microfiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>microfiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/flashfiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>flashfiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/tootfic" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tootfic</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/smallstory" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>smallstory</span></a></p>

I wrestled with that for awhile—okay, since I conceived the story—but since a story that takes place years later pretty much skips this part of history, I've decided to add an epilogue which is difficult but arguably satisfying, i.e., bittersweet. Sometimes the characters have to focus on what they can have, not what they might want. </p><p>FYI: Edited post so as not to give away which WIP. </p><p>[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a></p>

What are they like?</p></blockquote><p>Most of my stories include fight scenes, though I include antagonistic verbal sparing as well as physical fighting in this category. <em>Reluctant Fighter</em> will contain many of both, especially since the MC has a razor sharp tongue. I'd characterize my fight scenes as a stream of consciousness through the eyes of the POV as she fights, thinks through her actions, and relates her revelations. The details are either bits of world building needed for the story, or utilizing what the reader has gotten earlier so they can get used to the mechanics. All scenes, including fight scenes, alway advance the plot or I'd leave them out.</p><p>The excerpt in the second half of this thread is a first draft example with typos and grammar oopses from <em>Reluctant Fighter</em>. Think of what the characters are doing in this sequence as magic; you'll have to read the stories to learn the physics of it. The fight continues after the except in the book. This is the first half. The MC, a young devil-girl who hasn't yet trained to be strong and fight smartly, has thrown a persistent fight trainer into an alley. He wanted to train her, but has tripped her up in return…</p><p>[Author retains copyright (c)2025 R.S.]</p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/BoostingIsSharing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BoostingIsSharing</span></a></p><p><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/gender" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>gender</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/fiction" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fiction</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writer" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writer</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/author" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>author</span></a> <br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writing</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writingcommunity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writingcommunity</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writersOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writersOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/writers" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>writers</span></a><br><a href="https://eldritch.cafe/tags/RSdiscussion" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>RSdiscussion</span></a></p>
