CLondoner92 (New Account)<p>The UK Prime Minister has announced a major investment in the North's <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/transport" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>transport</span></a> system, marking the largest rail funding in decades. Nearly £1.7 billion will be allocated to local buses, roads, and trams this year, alongside £415 million for key rail upgrades across the <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Pennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pennines</span></a>. The government is also investing £270 million in bus services and £330 million in road maintenance. This package aims to transform the North’s Victorian-era transport <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/infrastructure" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>infrastructure</span></a> and support regional growth. A devolution agenda will empower local mayors to accelerate projects such as new tram networks in West <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Yorkshire" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Yorkshire</span></a> and station upgrades in Merseyside. The funding will better connect cities like <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Leeds" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Leeds</span></a>, <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Liverpool" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Liverpool</span></a>, and <a href="https://mastodonapp.uk/tags/Manchester" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Manchester</span></a>, boosting industries like fintech and life sciences. The government pledges to restore fairness, improve living standards, and deliver long-awaited infrastructure upgrades for the North.<br><a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/news/pm-north-will-no-longer-be-held-to-ransom-by-broken-transport-system" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="ellipsis">gov.uk/government/news/pm-nort</span><span class="invisible">h-will-no-longer-be-held-to-ransom-by-broken-transport-system</span></a></p>

Ivor<p>A little montage of Monday morning in the N Pennines. It's stopped snowing but the wind has got up even more and fine snow is drifting in off the fields. Max depth is about 200mm, half the depth expected.</p><p>I think the roads are passable but not going out today. I believe the A66 is still closed from Brough over the highest stretch.</p><p>Dug a path to the byre and that's far enough. I don't think it will melt quickly as temps expected to drop a lot over next few days. <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Snow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Snow</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Teesdale" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Teesdale</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Pennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pennines</span></a></p>
Ivor<p>It's been snowing all day, heavy this pm, less so now. Not the 400m deep that was forecast, maybe 150mm although drifts in the strong wind are deeper.</p><p>If they could get there, the skiers at Yad Moss, about 4 miles towards Alston from here, must have had an excellent day. Maybe it was 400mm up there.</p><p>My volunteer walling work day tomorrow in Weardale is cancelled and I have strong doubts about Tuesday. I'm told the snow at Nenthead was on BBC News, so I'll watch that later. <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Snow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Snow</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Pennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pennines</span></a></p>
Ivor<p>Inside the byre today. In the far corner, the rabbits are in an enclosure, roofed by plastic and heated by a fan heater. Snow doesn't seem to get in there, they're perfectly fine and itching to get out into the snow. </p><p>The roof is made of thin stone slabs which don't fit perfectly. They keep rain and snow out if it falls vertically but a strong wind blows it up and under the stones. </p><p>So, we regularly have snow inside the byre because it's rarely not windy up here. <br><a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Snow" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Snow</span></a> <a href="https://mstdn.social/tags/Pennines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Pennines</span></a></p>
