Not all trans people want to blend into the normative male/female population, but sometimes we need to. Society is often enforcing norms of gender appearance and expression. To appear trustworthy, competent and acceptable, we sometimes have to go through great lengths. Imagine applying for a job, standing in court or walking through a hostile environment.
I'm proud of being queer, trans and non-binary. But I also want to learn passing, for survival in these situations.
