Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)
The two main screens are animations created in Synfig by Timothee Giet. These consist of cels and curve data that was animated in Synfig Studio, currently stored in compressed "SIFZ" format.

I have to say, Synfig Studio is not something I ever mastered, and I've never personally tried to regenerate those animations. I just used the video output I got from Timothee.

So, as a practical matter, I'm probably going to include the video output in the source (along with the SIF originals). The video from those is only about 1.2 MB in webm format.

This was upscaled for the texture and then stored as PNG streams to go into the Kdenlive edit, but I might be able to manage using the webm files instead as part of the current refactoring.

This would all make the "source" much smaller, and move the combined texture output into the Renders folder -- meaning the recipient would be expected to generate that using Kdenlive, before running the Blender rendering to animate the shots that use it.

So yeah. It's complicated.
#LunaticsProject # #OpenMovie

Terry Hancock (Director/Producer)
But those aren't really the source, either.

The two narrower touchpanels, are screens I created in Inkscape. Then I tweaked them to make the 1 fps frames (matching the timer, which is ticking out seconds). This was a manual process -- if there is any way to animate this in Inkscape, I don't know how to do it. So this creates a few dozen PNG images. These were then duplicated to match the 30 fps framerate in Blender (and when I merged the videos, I just used that).

So, in one sense, the layered SVG drawings from Inkscape are the "source". But I can't include a script to automatically generate those, as I did that manually. So they don't quite include everything.

I could make it a priority to write some sort of script to replicate what I did manually, but that's not really authentic to how I made the animations, and it'd be a lot of extra work that isn't really necessary for the production. So no, I'm not doing that.

So I also need to include the output PNG frames, at least. I'm currently extracting those unique frames from the 30fps versions. A bit tedious, but easier than trying to recreate them from the SVG.

This looks like it'll be around 20 MB (0.02 GB). MUCH more manageable.
#LunaticsProject # #OpenMovie

Continued thread

Later, I realized it would be a LOT easier to keep the timing straight if I just merged them all into one giant video texture at the same 30fps as the rest of the animation. This was easy to do with Kdenlive, which I might mention was not in our toolkit when we started.

This is very convenient, but that video texture is about 8.4 GB. If treated as 'source code', it is by far the largest contribution to the size of the source for the episode (it may be more than half of it, I'd have to check).

But of course, it's not
really the source. We can break it down to the Kdenlive file, and the video clips that it uses.

Which is better: about 2 GB.
