Fell<p>It is with great disappointment that I report: <a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/VR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VR</span></a> on <a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a> just isn't ready yet. It would be, if <a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/Valve" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Valve</span></a> would fix <a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/SteamVR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SteamVR</span></a> up to the same standard as the <a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/Windows" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Windows</span></a> build, but in it's current state it's very restricted.</p><p><a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/Envision" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Envision</span></a>, <a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/Monado" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Monado</span></a>, <a href="https://ma.fellr.net/tags/OpenComposite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenComposite</span></a>, all these things are great, and they get you 98% of the experience. It works better than SteamVR for crying out loud.</p><p>But it's that 2% of issues that will make you go back to Windows. I hate to admit it, but it's the truth.</p>
Nulhomme<p>Alright tried once more to make monado + opencomposite work because other people "assured me it would work" and it doesn't..... followed <a href="https://lvra.gitlab.io/docs/distros/nixos/" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">lvra.gitlab.io/docs/distros/ni</span><span class="invisible">xos/</span></a> + <a href="https://wiki.nixos.org/wiki/VR" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">wiki.nixos.org/wiki/VR</span><span class="invisible"></span></a> + <a href="https://monado.freedesktop.org/valve-index-setup.html#5-setting-up-opencomposite" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">monado.freedesktop.org/valve-i</span><span class="invisible">ndex-setup.html#5-setting-up-opencomposite</span></a>, so is there a fucking secret magic documentation that make this work or everyone lying ???</p><p><a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/vr" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>vr</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>linux</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/nixos" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nixos</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/monado" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>monado</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/opencomposite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>opencomposite</span></a></p>
Francis Mangion (M) (VR/AR/*)<p>OpenOVR/OpenComposite: "The tool you've been waiting for for a stutter-free experience in OpenVR." Maxwell (it/its)<p>After a year of anguish, I've given up on <a href="https://meow.social/tags/SteamVR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SteamVR</span></a> and threw in my lot with <a href="https://meow.social/tags/Monado" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Monado</span></a>, <a href="https://meow.social/tags/LibSurvive" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>LibSurvive</span></a>, and <a href="https://meow.social/tags/OpenComposite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenComposite</span></a>. I didn't have high hopes for this stack.</p><p>But I was wrong. Yes, it was kind of a pain to set up, but I had a good guide to lead me through the process on Arch-derivatives (<a href="https://monado.freedesktop.org/valve-index-setup.html" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">monado.freedesktop.org/valve-i</span><span class="invisible">ndex-setup.html</span></a>).</p><p>Monado works! The reprojection works! And this puts to rest my hypotheses that maybe something other than SteamVR broke. My hardware works fine with Monado, but not SteamVR, which I must interpret as evidence that SteamVR is just a broken mess on <a href="https://meow.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a>.</p><p>I finally have a reason to get back into <a href="https://meow.social/tags/Resonite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Resonite</span></a>! I needed to be kitsunedoll in <a href="https://meow.social/tags/VR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VR</span></a> again so bad.</p><p>By the way, the mistake I made was to point to the wrong directory in <code>openvrpaths.vrpath.opencomp</code>. I didn't have a <code>git</code> directory to clone OpenComposite into. Oops.</p>
Atemu<p>There are still some bugs to iron out such as screen-space reflections in BeatSaber being off (probably an <a href="https://darmstadt.social/tags/opencomposite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>opencomposite</span></a> bug) and <a href="https://darmstadt.social/tags/libsurvive" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>libsurvive</span></a>'s own calibration without input from <a href="https://darmstadt.social/tags/SteamVR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SteamVR</span></a> did not produce satisfactory results in the slightest but we're extremely close to being able to ditch <a href="https://darmstadt.social/tags/SteamVR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SteamVR</span></a> for good.</p>
Atemu<p>Just played <a href="https://darmstadt.social/tags/BeatSaber" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>BeatSaber</span></a> via <a href="https://darmstadt.social/tags/opencomposite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>opencomposite</span></a> using a <a href="https://darmstadt.social/tags/monado" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>monado</span></a> + <a href="https://darmstadt.social/tags/libsurivive" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>libsurivive</span></a> stack on my <a href="https://darmstadt.social/tags/ValveIndex" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>ValveIndex</span></a>.</p><p>Not only did it work but it worked extremely well after using `survive-cli --steamvr-calibration ~/.steam/steam/config/lighthouse/lighthousedb.json` to import the SteamVR calibration data.</p><p>Honestly, compositing was a lot smoother than <a href="https://darmstadt.social/tags/SteamVR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>SteamVR</span></a> on Linux even. Impressive.</p><p>All working beautifully on <a href="https://darmstadt.social/tags/NixOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NixOS</span></a> thanks to <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://floss.social/@Scrumplex" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>Scrumplex</span></a></span>'s work in PRs like <a href="https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/245005" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/</span><span class="invisible">245005</span></a></p>
haagch<p>The result of a productive BoF at <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/fosdem" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>fosdem</span></a> with <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Monado" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Monado</span></a> and <span class="h-card"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@overte" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">@<span>overte</span></a></span>: <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/Overte" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Overte</span></a> running on Monado and a WMR <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/VR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>VR</span></a> headset via <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/OpenComposite" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenComposite</span></a> with Monado's SLAM tracking based on basalt and Monado's hand tracking, though Overte doesn't use real finger tracking yet.</p><p>And it only took a few patches to OpenComposite and LD_PRELOAD'ing a few libraries to get monado loaded with Overte's appimage.</p><p>Looking forward to Overte natively supporting <a href="https://mastodon.online/tags/OpenXR" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>OpenXR</span></a>.</p>
