Andi ChorleyElectric Piano by Nils Frahm, released in 2008.“The studio we used in south Berlin was more like a shitty rehearsal room,” Frahm recalls of the single night on which ‘Electric Piano’ was put together. “The whole place stank of cheap cleaning products, we had no natural light, and it was damp and smelly. We took the first bus home at four or five in the morning, and I remember that we felt like it had been a good day. But when I heard it all again, I didn’t feel so confident.” With his judgement perhaps clouded by chemical fumes, Frahm was being unnecessarily sceptical: the album features seven fragile, graceful compositions which provide a clear signpost towards his future. “Now I’ve rediscovered it,” he concludes, “I feel grateful this exists, because it truly sounds like someone different I can’t ever bring back. Though it showcased his blossoming talents as a creator of intricate, exquisite soundscapes, few of the records flew out of stores. “I wasn’t playing shows, and I couldn’t play the material live” he remembers. “We had no promotion campaign at all, and it took us over ten years to sell them. I’d moved to Berlin just as it came out and I’d bring three copies to one record shop, then one month later they’d have sold one and still have two, so I’d get €7. Ruben PhilipsenTime lapse photograph of the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, facade facing the garden, Maincy, France, 2021 When lit in the right way and photographed using a zoomlens with a very slow shutter speed, the facade facing the garden of the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte (picture 1) seems to bear a striking resemblence to architect Louis Le Vau’s design for the so-called Envelope (picture 2) which was erected at the Chateau de Versailles between 1668 and 1670. This creation wrapped itself around an already existing and fairly modest hunting lodge build by Louis XIII decades earlier. After Louis XIV had visited the Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte in 1661, the architect Louis Le Vau, the landscape architect André Le Nôtre and the painter-decorator Charles Le Brun, who had worked together on this large-scale project, were commissioned by the Sun King to rebuild and further extend his Chateau de Versailles. Their collaboration eventually became known as the Louis XIV style combining architecture, interior design and landscape design in one grandiose apotheosis: nature becoming architecture and archtecture incorporating nature. With the album, Arnalds set out to document the journey of life, from birth to death. Arnalds wrote on the occasion of the 2017 reissue and remastering of the LP:"It was an ambitious outing. When I was 18 my uncle passed away from cancer. It was the first time I had experienced the passing of someone close to me, so I dedicated my work to him. Around the same time, his first grandchild was born, and was named after him. I was inspired by the joy and positivity he brought, and saw that somehow life was extended after our death.
