フェリッペ<p>Recently I installed NEXTSPACE on my computer, a NeXTSTEP-like desktop environment for Linux. I've been loving every second of it!</p><p>I also started looking into making applications using their frameworks and it reminded me a lot of SmallTalk! Built this silly BMI calculator while learning the basics.</p><p><a href="https://merveilles.town/tags/nextstep" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nextstep</span></a> <a href="https://merveilles.town/tags/nextspace" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nextspace</span></a> <a href="https://merveilles.town/tags/smalltalk" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>smalltalk</span></a></p>
Johannes Brakensiek<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mstdn.ca/@tylerburton" class="u-url mention">@<span>tylerburton</span></a></span> Well, I‘m still using <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://ap.nil.im/users/objfw" class="u-url mention">@<span>objfw</span></a></span> and <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/GObject" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GObject</span></a> mainly so I don‘t really know first hand. I think Base/Foundation still is used for production to port some apps to Android. Regarding <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/GUI" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GUI</span></a>/#AppKit <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://oldbytes.space/@mos_8502" class="u-url mention">@<span>mos_8502</span></a></span> created some patches to make it more look like some kind of Mac OS X. And before war in Ukraine trunkmaster applied some patches for better multi display support for <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Nextspace" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Nextspace</span></a>.</p>
Petro Dudi<p>A <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/NeXTSTEP" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NeXTSTEP</span></a> -like desktop environment for <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/Linux" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>Linux</span></a>. 🔗<a href="https://github.com/trunkmaster/nextspace" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">github.com/trunkmaster/nextspa</span><span class="invisible">ce</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/retrocomputing" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>retrocomputing</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/unix" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>unix</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/nextspace" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nextspace</span></a></p>
Johannes Brakensiek<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://oldbytes.space/@mos_8502" class="u-url mention">@<span>mos_8502</span></a></span> yes, sounds wise. sometimes I woke up and thought „uh, today I‘m gonna make <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Nextspace" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Nextspace</span></a> look like Mac OS X“, but I never did 😉</p>
Johannes Brakensiek<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://paquita.masto.host/@anthk" class="u-url mention">@<span>anthk</span></a></span> Well, that is the job of a distribution. If you try to do that you are going to stumble about the issue that <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/GWorkspace" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GWorkspace</span></a> and <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/PreferencesApp" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>PreferencesApp</span></a> are not a complete DE. So you end up pulling in stuff from <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/MATE" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>MATE</span></a> or start building <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Nextspace" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Nextspace</span></a>.</p>
Johannes Brakensiek<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://floss.social/@ademalsasa" class="u-url mention">@<span>ademalsasa</span></a></span> <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastouille.fr/@gugurumbe" class="u-url mention">@<span>gugurumbe</span></a></span> I think there was a GNUstep release for evaluating it, but <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://fosstodon.org/@probono" class="u-url mention">@<span>probono</span></a></span> dropped it in favour of Qt tech. So helloSystem is not about *step or <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/ObjC" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ObjC</span></a> now.</p><p>If you want to get closer to that look at <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Darling" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Darling</span></a> (<a href="https://www.darlinghq.org" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://www.</span><span class="">darlinghq.org</span><span class="invisible"></span></a>) or <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/ravynOS" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>ravynOS</span></a> (<a href="https://airyx.org" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">airyx.org</span><span class="invisible"></span></a>) or <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Nextspace" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Nextspace</span></a> (<a href="https://trunkmaster.github.io" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener" translate="no"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="">trunkmaster.github.io</span><span class="invisible"></span></a>).</p>
Johannes Brakensiek<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://oldbytes.space/@mos_8502" class="u-url mention">@<span>mos_8502</span></a></span> Thank you for your post! I really like <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/GNUstep" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GNUstep</span></a> and its concepts. The biggest challenge I see regarding you idea is the current state of GNUstep. It barely is the thin application layer <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/OpenStep" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>OpenStep</span></a> / Yellow / Blue Box was meant to be, which later became Cocoa. Fixing it to work like intended already is a huge task. Making a desktop environment out of it (projects like <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/Nextspace" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>Nextspace</span></a> or <a href="https://fosstodon.org/tags/GWorkspace" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>GWorkspace</span></a> try) are even bigger ones.</p>
