New paper out! We explore connectivity patterns of railway timetables with #networkscience and #Infomap clustering, enjoy! journals.plos.org/plosone/arti

journals.plos.orgUnveiling connectivity patterns of railway timetables through complex network theory and Infomap clusteringThis study introduces a novel framework for analysing railway timetable connectivity through complex network theory and the Infomap clustering algorithm. By transforming timetable data into network representations, we systematically assess the connectivity and efficiency of the Norwegian railway system for the 2024 and projected 2033 scenarios. We define and implement the Timetable Connectivity Index (Tc), a comprehensive metric integrating service frequency, travel times, and the hierarchical network structure. The analysis is conducted across three distinct network spaces: Stops, Stations, and Changes, with both unweighted and weighted networks. Our results reveal key insights into how infrastructural developments, service frequencies, and travel time adjustments influence network connectivity. Comparative analysis of the two scenarios highlights improvements in physical infrastructure and travel time efficiency by 2033, while also identifying areas where service frequency distribution and transfer effectiveness may require further optimization. The findings provide valuable insights for railway planners and operators, aiming to improve the efficiency and reliability of train networks.

re-#introduction
Hi Fediscience! I am an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (Honolulu). I got here starting from Physics training with many scientific detours into data-driven models, complex systems, nanomaterial self-assembly, human learning of complex networks, naval ships, and design problems.
I grew up in Belarus and have *opinions* on that region of the world. I've been on Fediverse since late 2022 when *something* happened to our previous cybersocial infrastructure, but the previous server I was on is sunsetting. Please come say hi and recommend cool people to follow here.
I have a blog with longer thoughts on science-adjacent topics.

The authors: we looked at the clustering coefficient [cite my paper]

Me: you don't say... THE clustering coefficient, uh! right, right...

Context: I wrote a paper discussing the differences between multiple different definitions of the clustering coefficient for weighted networks and how this can significantly affect the results; the paper citing my work does not even define which clustering coefficient they are using...

Some amazing #network research that revealed the top candidates for Pope recently. Of those revealed one is now the new Pope! The Vatican, and those around it, are a socio-political system where the “golden rule” is “location, location, location“

*Angst M, Müller NN, Walker V. Automated extraction of discourse networks from large volumes of media data* (open access)

doi.org/10.1017/nws.2025.4

As part of our sustainability.discourses project, we developed an automated method to gather and track discourse networks around urban sustainable mobility, based on media data.

The article describes the approach in detail and reports an evaluation of the internal validity (do we measure what we ourselves think we measure) of the pipeline.

tl;dnr: Automating discourse network data gathering can work well to capture broader tendencies. In many cases, it is likely not worth investing in automating data gathering to understand discourse however.

And here's is a list of journals in my field(s) that don't suck, based on my (own, possibly evolving) criteria. I hope it grows over time, it's still pretty bleak.
