Auka Kapak<p>A community-owned wind farm in the Outer Hebrides is funding a project to plant at least a million native trees on crofts by 2030. So far, 211,000 trees have been planted on 245 crofts to create small woods, promoting nature restoration and biodiversity.<br>+<br>The initiative is primarily funded by profits from the UK's largest community-owned wind farm near Stornoway. It generates £900,000 annually from three 3MW wind turbines. These profits are reinvested into local community projects, including the ambitious reforestation initiative. <br>+<br>This green energy project has already helped establish three new tree nurseries on the islands.<br>+<br>Crofters are in charge of planting on their own land, working with project advisors and forestry experts. The new woodlands feature a variety of species including alder, hazel, birch, rowan, and Scots pine. Some crofters have even included fruit orchards in their plantings.<br>--<br>h/t: The Guardian<br>Photo: Hebridean Tree Ark / Facebook<br>•••<br>@globalpositivenews<br>@globalpositivenews<br>@globalpositivenews<br>.<br>.<br>.<br><a href="https://mast.lat/tags/globalpositivenews" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>globalpositivenews</span></a> <a href="https://mast.lat/tags/news" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>news</span></a> <a href="https://mast.lat/tags/goodnews" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>goodnews</span></a> <a href="https://mast.lat/tags/tanksgoodnews" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>tanksgoodnews</span></a> <a href="https://mast.lat/tags/goodnewsmovement" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>goodnewsmovement</span></a> <a href="https://mast.lat/tags/nativetrees" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nativetrees</span></a> <a href="https://mast.lat/tags/trees" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>trees</span></a> <a href="https://mast.lat/tags/planttrees" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>planttrees</span></a> <a href="https://mast.lat/tags/windfarm" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>windfarm</span></a> <a href="https://mast.lat/tags/wildlifeconservation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>wildlifeconservation</span></a> <a href="https://mast.lat/tags/natureconservation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>natureconservation</span></a> <a href="https://mast.lat/tags/nature" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>nature</span></a> <a href="https://mast.lat/tags/plantingtrees" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>plantingtrees</span></a> <a href="https://mast.lat/tags/biodiversity" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>biodiversity</span></a> <a href="https://mast.lat/tags/windturbines" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>windturbines</span></a> <a href="https://mast.lat/tags/reforestation" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>reforestation</span></a> <a href="https://mast.lat/tags/community" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>community</span></a></p>
Cavedale Rhônes<p>Today’s Mayacamas native tree is the Knobcone Pine (Pinus attenuata). Sometimes known as Fire Pines. Shown are a pair of cones on a 7 year old tree that reseeded after the 2017 Nuns Canyon fire. They are very well adapted to fire. The cones open up at around 350 degrees and drop their seeds as a fire comes through. The trees are goblet shaped, and live to be around 60 years old and then fall apart. Well adapted to a 30-50 year Chaparral fire return interval. They are tricky (read: dangerous) to take down with a chainsaw as the goblet shape makes their center of gravity hard to figure out. Also the cones are very sharp and nasty if you get hit with one. <a href="https://sfba.social/tags/NativeTrees" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">#<span>NativeTrees</span></a></p>
